Post subject:  Are cats still the more feminine pet?

I was thinking the other day about how a lot of men don't like cats since they're perceived to be the more feminine animal when compared to dogs. However, when you think of various girly-girl celebrities, what do they own? (Not a cat.) So I started wondering if cats were still perceived as the more feminine animal, or if things have begun to change.

The thing I don't like about small dogs is that if something is that small, it better have something else going for it (cat-like agility perhaps), but in terms of agility, (most) dogs are Andrew Peters and most cats are Max Afinogenov.

I like dogs, but I've always been a cat person.

Yes, cats are more feminine. ;)

I never thought of cats being perceived as more feminine pets. Hmm...maybe that's why you never hear of crazy cat dudes, but we all know crazy cat ladies.

I really can't choose. I love animals. I guess I am a dog person. I have 3 dogs and a cat. I love them in different ways.

I love dogs, I really do, but they've got their nuances. I (personally) dislike having a dog when living in an apartment, for example. I want to let my dog in the back yard and let him run and play and piss on every blade of grass and just live it up. So, at this juncture in my life, I'm a cat person. If I feel the need to pet something, every cat I've ever had has come when called (perhaps because of how much I ignore it otherwise), or I can go find the bastard and pull it out and pet it until I'm content.

Are you kidding me? Cats are super-masculine. Only big, hulking guys oozing with testosterone would ever say, use a cat as an avatar...

But to be serious. I spent most of my life hating cats because I'm allergic. I'd never owned one, or even really related to one well. I thought dogs were more good-natured, and cats were finicky and manipulative and held grudges. I used to think that's why so many girls owned cats and were so obsessed with them.

But then when I met my wife, I was slowly won over by her cat, that I now consider my own as well (legally I get 50% if we divorce). I also developed a resistance to my allergy of him. it's weird but I think it must be true. When I first would spend the night at our house, I'd break out in hives from my contact with Quinn. I'd have to take allergy medication every day. Now I hardy ever have to take an allergy pill and the Quinn in our bed every night.

So I've done a 180 and now I'm obsessed with my cat, and the stray that we adopted as our outdoor cat. Not sure if I think cats are less feminine now, or if I'm just more in touch with my feminine side.

I think the question should be what type of dog is more feminine. Cats are cool, never thought of them as more or less feminine, they just typically have a more independent, aloof personality than dogs. That being said, a small yiping fucking rat dog is WAY more gay than a cat. Dog is too general. My husky isn't on the same playing field as a toy poodle...though she could probably eat one in one bite.

Oh, and I couldn't pick which I prefer, but I did vote that cats are the more feminine.

Egh...I've met some pretty hard core poodles.
I've also met some awesome pugs and chihuahuas....they're not annoying by default.

Like anything involving dogs, it depends how they're trained and treated. You train a little dog to act like a god damned dog and it will...you put a diamond collar on it, carry it around in a handbag and treat it like a spoiled child and that's how it'll behave.

Yeah I guess that's the thing. The physical differences in different breeds of dogs are much more apparent than they are in different breeds of cats.

For the record, we own 7 cats, a black lab, and two cockatiels.

my dog would smoke any cat in agility skills. fox terrier, baby. plus my dog camps with me and has his own backpack to carry his water dish, food, and toys.

I have a chihuahua and she is the cutest, sweetest little thing ever. She isn't nippy or over energetic like some small dogs tend to be. She just loves to be cuddled and loved and she plays with her BFF (my cat) a lot. Her name is Tequila.

Here she is hanging out with her BFF.

I like dogs and cats equally... But I love the huge dogs that try to just ram into you and mess up what you're doing.

i used to to have a standard poodle that was a serious badass. his name was bubba, which cmon is badass alone. anytime we ordered pizza the guy at the door would ask if "that dogs in a cage" cause he had a bark like a pitbull. bubba also knew how to bite on command. and even though he was just playing when he did it and knew not to bite hard, he sure was strong.

he did drink his water like a serious priss, though. he'd put his nose on the edge of the dish and just lick at it so his nose didn't ever get wet. really, aside from his hair-cut that was his only prissy/yippy dog like trait. best.dog.ever.

I like those wacky cats that look like bears and play like puppies. Those things are the fucking tits.

I'm with NYI on this one - I'm a cats/apartment and dogs/yard kind of guy. Although, if I'm getting dogs in an apartment, it's a pair of corgis.
