http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... =131144212 Next weekend, more than 60 different teams from high schools and universities across the country are expected to gather at De Witt Clinton Park in New York City for the fourth annual Quidditch World Cup. Harvard University, M.I.T, Yale, Penn State, Duke — several prestigious universities are registered for the World Cup and count quidditch among their extracurricular activities. Not bad for a game that just a few years ago existed only in the pages of the Harry Potter series. |

They run around with a broom between their legs because they enjoy the extra chafing opportunity or what? If the NCAA still hasn't accepted cheerleading as a recognized sport this crap will never fly...just like its participants |

Egh, it kind of annoys me when people make fun of LARPers and others that do this kind of thing. It's not that different than when jocks go out and play flag football together since you know they're all Peyton Manning or Ladanian Tomlinson in their heads. Not really any more realistic than pretending you're a wizard. |

Haha, there are a lot of similarities between "cool" hobbies and "dorky" ones. People do what they enjoy, and good for them. The way I see it, at least these people are exercising more than their mouse and keyboard fingers by actually going out and doing something. I spent too much time in H.S. feeling self conscious about reading Star Trek books and captaining the Science Olympiad and Math League teams to really make fun of these kids. For the record, I think it's dorky as hell and would never be caught dead LARPing...oh wait, paintball is LARPing...shit. |

(I am too.......just picked up the newest book in the Wheel of Time series....shhhh) Haha guilty. I was pretty self conscious about it pretty much until I went to a college full of nerds and started to embrace it. It's funny though because I played Varsity Baseball and was on the Bowling team so I was pretty well respected by the athletes too. Except the lacrosse players, god our lacrosse players were cocks. |

Since they're not flying, they might as well be playing lacrosse, field hockey or even hurling...all of which are existing established sports and are brutally similar to what these folks are doing. No....these are just fanbois, which is fine, but quidditch shouldn't be uttered in the same sentence as "NCAA". |

Live Action Role Playing It's D&D, but out in the woods with foam swords and rubber breastplates. |

You'll see one day Cross, these are the nerds that will invent a broom that really can fly and this sport will become real. |

Flag Football at least maintains the basic principles of advancing the ball, scoring, downs, etc. Whereas quidditch without flying really is just soccer where you can carry the ball. |
