When Woz talks I listen  http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/18/woz-ap ... -the-race/ I tend to agree with him when he likens it to mac vs. windows (in the early years)...if you're using market share as a measuring stick, M$ certainly "won" that battle with open standards (android) compared to Apple's walled-garden(iOS and app approval). |

the top 2 rated phones on the market are android phones. the EVO is 1. a verizon version of the EVO is coming soon. the HTC android incredible HD, AKA nexus two, AKA HTC mecha.  several friends of mine have the iphone 4. some like it. one girl flat out told me she hates hers and not to get one.

I respect the Woz too. I think the biggest worry that Android should have is fragmentation. The one advantage that Apple has is that you know what core software and hardware that you're developing for, every time. Android updates take too long to make it out to phones, and even then there is no guarantee your app will run on that specific hardware. Gizmodo has an article about that today. There are 18 distinct models of Android phones that cannot run the stock Angry Birds for Android binary. Some of these phones are quite new too. To compensate, they are developing a lite version that will run on the less powerful hardware. That's not something that has to happen on iOS. (Although the flip side is Apple's planned obsolescence with certain features.) I think the openness of Android helps the ecosystem though. Ideas that get developed on the Android platform will force Apple into adding them into iOS to keep their competitive edge. |

Apple makes the most functional and highest quality handset you can buy. Android will appeal to the masses for its versatility. Doesn't really surprise me. However, it'll be interesting to see if this remains true when the iPhone starts hitting other networks. |

You can hate on the retina display all you want, but it was independently analyzed by some scientists who determined that the pixel density was high enough that most people could not discern individual pixels. There were some outliers in the data, but for the vast majority of the public their statements were correct. |

Froyo (Android 2.2) was 'released' months ago. It's finally trickling down to consumer handsets now that carriers have chopped it up and added their trash to it. It's basically faster, and a good whack of new features. That's the other downside of Android. You don't get software updates for a LONG time after they're released because of the carriers having to get in there and rewrite half of it. |

the HTC EVO shift 4g is coming out soon. its the second EVO, which i assume will become a series of releases. http://androidcommunity.com/htc-knight- ... -20101116/ im in the market for a new cell phone so ive been doing serious research. ive even considered getting 2 phones. one as my main phone, the other as my bat phone. but then i remembered im not THAT important. |

Out of the Android phones I've played with, the Droid X really does give the iPhone a run. That's a solid one right there. |

Not saying that it can't happen, but it'd be pretty difficult to maintain the kind of attention to detail and control that Apple gets by designing the hardware and software. i dont think everything to do with the iphone is done by apple. im pretty sure they have 3rd party companies bid to create hardware and software for the iphone. i get what you are saying though. android is done by many phone manufacturers. however, HTC got it right. big time. with the EVO. that phone is the king phone out there, right now. and the fact that they are making one for verizon (under a different name, of course) is massive to me. i like the iphone and i was pretty sold on it till i played with an evo. that phone just knocks everything else out. its stunning. i also loved the droid X, too, tom. but that phone is due to be taken off the shelves soon. i expect a droid X HD to follow soon. the one thing about the iphone is they make a new one each year, where as droid phones have a shelf life of a few months, then poof, something better is out there. alot of android phones are quality, only a handful are true gems. |

That's not correct. Apple uses a good number of 3rd party chips for specific functions, but they design the entire thing top to bottom in house. Since they've moved to the A4 CPU, even that design is done inside. The iPhone OS is 100% Apple. No outside party has anything to do with it. |

They give vendors exact specifications to what parts they want, and choose someone to manufacture the parts. Not really any different than any other company. |

i think, with the exception of 1 or 2 phones, the iphone is still BMOC. but i dont think, in my opinion, its the best of the best. im pretty sure ive jacked off to a certain phone enough today for everyone to know what phone that is. i will say this. id give my left arm (def leppard style) to have something other then this POS blackberry. |

It's just perspective. The iPhone may fit for one person, but not another. Android may fit that person, but not someone else. Apple should be commended for busting down the door to open up the market to this generation of smartphones, but past that, use what phone you like. |
