I thought it was probably one of the most awkward/scariest things I've ever done, and can't for the life of me rationalize why. Anyone else feel the same way? |

What, did you get a new job? Are you leaving this area or are you staying here? |

I don't know. I suppose it depends on the terms. Why are you leaving? The last time I handed in my two weeks notice, I made sure my boss knew how thankful I was for the job and everything he taught me, and it was fine. |

Leaving the area; Dec 15th to be exact. Moving back down south. This job wasn't all it was cracked up to be, not challenging at all, though I did learn quite a bit just by volunteering to get into things that definitely weren't in my position description. There was also NO chance for advancement. I couldn't go to company paid for training unless it specifically applied to the contract I was working on (which I kind of understand, but the new company doesn't care what I get certified in, if it's technical and my passion, all it does is help increase their resume when bidding on new contracts). It was a good stop-gap off unemployment, gave a good enough paycheck to pay the bills, and helped my girlfriend see why I love living in an area with 4 seasons. |

Egh...I've felt bad about it before just out of loyalty and knowing how hard it was going to be for them to find a replacement. It's business though, try not to let it get to you personally. |

That's kind of how I felt; they wouldn't feel bad giving me the boot, and my whole team is severely underpaid...they know people have been looking. The only one who isn't is the team lead, who spends his day on kongregate.com and his iPhone, collecting close to 100k/yr. He's got no desire to do anything in a leadership or career progression capacity, and is another reason I didn't want to stay. |

It makes sense that it was a bit awkward for you then. You're leaving because you feel that there's much better out there, therefore a 2 weeks notice in this case was also kind of like saying, "This isn't good enough for me." That's not an easy thing to throw at someone, even if it's extremely indirect like your case. That said, sounds like you did get some good out of it. I'm a big time believer that everything happens for a reason, and I'm glad to hear you're taking some things away from it. Good luck. |

Thanks. And you're spot on as far as why it was awkward. I didn't give them exact reasons in my notice, but thanked them for the opportunities, knowledge and guidance they provided. Did I mention they promised to send me to training when I was hired (exactly 1 year ago today), and I have yet to receive any, even though I've asked since about my 2nd month in? |

It's just business man. Don't let it bother you. You aren't screwing them over or anything. You gave full effort while working there, but felt that you could get a better opportunity elsewhere, and did so. You gave the employer appropriate notice that you planned to leave, and that's that. Your employers would have let you go if it was the right move for them. Don't sweat it if moving on was the right move for you. |

That suck but good for you getting the hell out of Northern Va. I wish I was in a career that I could go elsewhere. I'm really tired of the daily grind here with the horrendous commute that the state doesn't give a shit about. Anyway, good luck at your new employer and enjoy the south. |

Back when companies had your back and cared about their workers, I would have felt guilty about bailing but loyalty is a two way street. Rock on and good luck. |

Thanks man. This place definitely hasn't shown any interest in loyalty...a few months in I saw a position I felt like was a better fit. I talked to my PM about it, and he said he wasn't sure I had "enough time" in the position I had now. I asked him when enough time was, and he said "I don't know...you tell me. I just know as a manager for this company it's my duty to retain talented individuals and see them succeed." A few months ago, I saw a position open up that I wasn't quite qualified for, but it sounded like the took the resume of one of my coworkers and posted it as a description, so I told him about it (for him to apply - it was a promotion and pay raise). He talked to our PM about it, and the PM said "I'll see what I can do." My coworker followed up with HR - the PM didn't do anything at all. |

My dad worked for twenty five years at Grief Brothers Steel by NU. My grandfather retired from there after forty plus years and every one of my dads friends worked there for decades. One day the greedy fuckers realized they could all pocket more cash if they moved overseas. All those lifers at the company got booted and screwed out of pensions and what not. My dad lost his job and had to take any shit job he could to make ends meet. Fuck companies man, they care about money, not people. |

Hahahaha! Yup, my parents were hippies so it rubbed off. They weren't following the Dead of anything but were more a mix of hippie/blue collar workers. |
