I didn't scour the depths of the boards archives so if a like thread has already been launched, please merge this thread with my sincere apologies. If this is indeed the first of it's kind, I beseech the board moderator(s) to sticky this or create a new "Thar be Dragons" menu for movies reviews (with spoiler warnings when appropriate), hype, and miscellaneous tidbits about movies. I've watched many movies over the past 13 days, and I feel as though all of my communication sources need to consider my vain attempts at approval and denial for the cinematic arts. And so I shall begin with Youth in Revolt. I liked it, I can certainly relate to it even at my post pubescent age. It's a love story, it's not overly funny or dramatic, but a nice film. Don't think I'll be able to sit through the whole thing again, but I liked it enough to recommend it once. Flesh+Blood. This is a 1985 film that I had forgotten about, I seen half of it once before. It's a masterful film with great acting but if you have delicate sensibilities towards rape there are some scenes that you will want to avoid. The director had a strong sense of brutality with a hint of beauty. |

Just watched World's Greatest Dad with Robin Williams and loved it. Has to be one of the darkest, funniest, and more emotionally uncomfortable movies I've seen. Do not watch if you can't handle sex or death. |

Last movie I saw was Black Swan. Not the best Aronofsky film, but definitely top 3 (and really, it's gonna be hard to top the minimalist genius of Pi or the emotional upheaval of Requiem For A Dream). Typical crew on it - Aronofsky directing, Clint Mansell doing the score, Matty Libatique holding down the cinematographer's chair. Score, like preview Mansell scores, really enhances the film and (like Zimmer's Inception score) can totally take over the theater. Great acting from Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, and Mila Kunis. Script is pretty good but suffers from a trademark of Aronofsky's which usually enhances his films but detracts in this instance - the emotional scope of the film beats you over the head. A little subtlety would go a long way in this case. Me personally, I really dug the unrelenting pressure and emotions in Black Swan. Also, squeamish folks need not apply - this film has a fair amount of body horror. |

Requiem for a Dream was pretty awesome. I don't think I've seen pi, I get it mixed up with Equilibrium for no real reason that makes any sense. |

As the credits rolled at the end, my wife said, in sarcasm, "what a surprise, they're all men's names". She thought it was a misguided male perspective of what it's like to be a woman. When I pressed her a little more, she admitted she liked it. But I get her point, it presents a pretty catty and appearance-focused presentation of "woman". That said, it was OK. I was expecting to be a little more titillated by the lesbian sex scene. Don't take a date hoping to get lucky afterward, because as Phil says, there are plenty of disturbing images. |

From what I know of ballet (as I've known a couple of ballerinas and more than a handful of dancers in my lifetime), that world IS catty and appearance-focused. |

I watched it too, and I am ashamed to admit that I forced myself to watch the entire movie. First of all I loathe those Blair Witchie, character POV movies. I thought I could get past that and try and enjoy it, but it was SO BAD...it started bad...it got worse...and it ended bad. Not scary, not entertaining, just....bad. |

But Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld both were absolutely amazing in that movie and I think they both should win for the acting Oscars they're nominated for. |

The new Tron is fantastic, in my opinion. Just as good as the original. The social network is a great movie. Definitely a "new" style of movie. Didn't deserve to win those awards over Inception, though. |

The remake of True Grit is outstanding, and it is very different from the original 1969 film. They are two very different takes on the same novel. The original is filmed almost entirely in bright daylight, while the remake has a lot of night time scenes, and the differences between the two films grows even broader apart than that. I can't go into specifics without spoiling some events. I liked the acting very much, and I am pulling for that movie to win a lot of awards. One thing about movies made today, is that they are focused so much on feeling and being real. The amount of detail that can be captured on film today is amazing. However, there is something to be said for the innocence of older films, the majesty of wide open shots of the landscape never goes unappreciated. |

Crazy Heart was surprisingly good, I highly recommend it. It's about a washed up country singer who falls for a lovely young lady. Kurt Russell has the drunk or stoned bearded guy role down to a T. Big Lebowski, True grit, and Crazy Heart. He's the best. |

I Spit on Your Grave - Was entertaining in an extremely gory, horrific and sadistic way. The Town - More of a gangster action movie than a Heist movie as a recent cracked article labeled it. I thought it was decent, but ultimately forgettable and a stereotypical 'guy' film. Bullets and car chases, oh my. Lake Mungo - Is one of the after dark horrorfest movies and was fantastic. The style is that of a fake documentary which I realize isn't a lot of people's thing, but it was done really well. Perhaps less of a horror movie and more of a drama though. |

The movie "Buried" with Ryan Reynolds was an interesting movie. I think everyone should watch it at some point, it has a good way of viewing the movie. Its about a man who was buried alive in a coffin in Iraq and his fight to survive. I didnt like the movie at first, and I thought it was boring, but then after a while of really thinking about it, it sunk in more. I actually enjoyed it, I thought it was kinda boring and dragged but it was good. Also the movie "The social Network" was a really good movie. But my main beef with the movie is that I watch a 60 minutes interview with Mark Zuckerburg and he said that the whole point of facebook was not what the movie made it out to be, and I feel almost that the movie made him out to be the inconsiderate asshole. Which I really dont think was the case in real life, But such is life and such is a documentary movie about a person, its 25% true and the rest is fabricated to make it more interesting, But it was very good, in fact I saw it during my popular cinema's class and i went out and bought it a couple days later cuz i really enjoyed it. Bottom line both movies were really good in their own ways. I would recommend both movies to everyone. Also a movie that people who like those "conspiracy theory movies" with those documentary cameras, should check out "Apollo 18". Looks AWESOME. |
