So, my boyfriend has a relatively new Macbook Pro (about 6 months old) that starting today has been having some keyboard issues. The computer seems to think that the command key is pressed down, but having looked under both command keys, there's no gunk or anything causing it. He hasn't spilled anything on the computer. It just seemed to happen out of nowhere.

When you try and type anything, it obviously doesn't register, as it just figured you're pressing command+whatever. When we went to the keyboard viewer though, it registered that certain keys were being hit, even though nothing happened when they were pressed unless it was a shortcut key. However, other keys it didn't register as being pressed. O, P, L, . , 0, 9, and f10 are all some of the keys that aren't responsive. It seems to be in a relatively centralized area, so it's possible that there's more issues than just the command key.

Basically, any time you try and press any other keys, it makes that constant noise saying oh no you can't do that. What's weird is, if you press the right command key, the computer seems to act as if the command key isn't being pressed, as it doesn't make the noise. However, it still doesn't allow you to type anything. If that makes any sense at all.

I'm not sure if I've explained it super clearly. It's kind of a hard problem to explain, but neither of us really know how it happened, as we can't think of anything that would've caused it. He doesn't have an external keyboard, so we're not sure if it's a keyboard issue or if something else is wrong that's causing it. I figure he'll probably have to just bring it to the apple store, but I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone had any experience with this type of issue.

The best part about owning a MacBook (Pro) or any Mac product is that you can bring it to the Galleria Mall and they'll take a look at it. Their customer service is top notch. Might be best to get it looked at just because it's such a new laptop.

That is really strange, though. Never heard of that happening.

One of my USB ports on my MacBook just stopped working all of a sudden. Had a friend who said his went recently, too. What is up with these Macs recently?

resisting.... urge... to.... trash.... apple....

;)

all kidding aside, i dont know about macs, but, my old HP had some odd problems like this pop up now and then, and it was a pre-cursor to the motherboard going. dont know if the two have ANY correlation, but just tossing it out there.

It is weird. I've found some sites online where people claim to have had the same type of issue. Right now, he's saying the period key also seems to be stuck now. It may be that the computer thinks all the keys that aren't responding on the keyboard viewer are "stuck"? I'm not really sure.

He's probably going to go to the Galleria sometime soon to have them check it out, because none of the things we've seen online have worked. He can't even try to reinstall Snow Leopard, because his CD drive won't take the CD, though I'm not sure if that would help any. Seems more like there's some sort of issue in the connection between the keyboard and the computer or something.

Shutting down doesn't help. He hasn't tried taking the battery out, but I don't see that helping that much either, although I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try.

Okay, another thing to add to the weird list. The keyboard works in a hangman application he has on the computer. However, the letters that don't register on the computer don't work in this application. I'm guessing the only reason it works in this application is because the command key probably has no use in it. This is a weird issue.

I'd take it in to the apple store and have them take a look at it. If you're going to go on a day/time that's busy, book an appointment online and just show up 5-10 mins before to check in. It could be the keyboard itself or something as weird as it being stuck in a command that the keys are being pressed down.

If you are going to go to apple, make sure you back up all the data before hand in case they have to re-install the operating system and that way they won't have to charge you.

Here's the link to book the appointment if needed: http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ ; Just select NY and Walden Galleria, then follow the rest.

That's what the plan is at this point, as I think his entire keyboard is just shot to hell.

Back up everything in case it's a defective product and they swap it out for a new one!

My Dell laptop had a really weird keyboard issue as well. For some reason, certain keys wouldn't work. It was "a-d" and "g-k" going from left to right. It was really weird.

So I called Dell and had them send me another keyboard, which worked.

Similar problem with my daughters brand new Toshiba. It started to act like keys were being pressed when they weren't. I sent it back under warranty. They replaced the keyboard and within a few days of getting it back the damn thing starting to do it again. Suspecting a bad motherboard so it's going back again.

The other upside to the Genius Bar is that if you don't get what you want, you can usually raise a shitstorm to the manager and get what you want, plus free stuff.
