Stadium singer apologizes for anti-Semitic remark

"Irish tenor Ronan Tynan says he's sorry for making an anti-Semitic remark, and hopes for another chance to sing his noted rendition of "God Bless America" at Yankee Stadium.

"This is my mea culpa," he told The Associated Press before Saturday night's playoff game between the Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees.

A day after the Yankees dropped their long-standing tradition of having him perform the song during the seventh-inning stretch of postseason games, Tynan said he'd apologized to the woman who was the subject of his remark. Tynan also said he had made a charitable contribution to an organization of her choice.

"Several days ago I made a joke that was insensitive. My attempt at humor was inappropriate and hurtful to the person who heard it," Tynan read over the telephone in a statement to the AP. "I apologized to the person who was rightfully offended and I am so grateful my sincere apology was accepted."

......Oooops. Seems the Sabres always lose whenever he sings, before a "big" game...

What exactly did he say? Seems he's being very contrite, so if they're still keeping him banned even after such profuse apologies it should have been something praising Hitler and crematoriums. Being Jewish, I really hope it wasn't just a harmless pun...we get enough bad pub as it is, and I don't want any unnecessary, unwanted attention.

EDIT: I read the article, and it seems he already had apologized to the Jewish woman he offended, she accepted the apology, and this should be the end of it. Time for the Yankees to reinstate him and move on.

From the NY Times:

"...the incident occurred when a real estate agent was showing an apartment in Tynan’s building to Gold-Von Simson and jokingly said to Tynan, “Don’t worry, they’re not Red Sox fans.”

Tynan reportedly replied, “I don’t care about that, as long as they are not Jewish.”

I caught this the other day.

If the person he made the remark to accepted the apology and considers it done with, then it should be done with. The Yankees shouldn't be passing additional judgment.

Not really anti semitic in my opinion...Not like he used a slur.

Ummm. He was obviously kidding around... I say similar things all the time, typically when joking around with friends, referencing nationalities that I know are parts of their heritages... "Anti-Semitic remark" my foot.

Oh, context. You so crazy.

I think it was pretty funny. I think it was a good attempt at humor. Unfortunately, there are too many people in this world looking for ways to be offended.
