Some anonymous user has been posting harassing comments on my blog for the last several days now. I thought they'd get bored pretty quickly, but it's been about a week and they haven't let up. I have tracked their IP using statcounter, but I'm not that great with computers. I can block the IP from accessing my website, but I'd like to know who it is (at least a username) so that I can limit their access to other social networking sites and take care of things in one fell swoop.

And yes, I deleted them, just going to keep squashing their voice until they get bored and go away. This was their first comment on my "Ideal Woman. Criminally Vulgar Style" Entry.



Which is funny for a variety of reasons. The most obvious of which is that I have a girlfriend now. Plus most of those are truths that I am aware of and okay with, and not insults. I know my podcasts are crap, I know that I'm introverted and prone to hiding away in my cave. And as far as weird looking, the doctor said that growth on my penis would go away.


Pretty much daily they've found a new thing to offer commentary on and insult me for. More annoying than any depth of bothersome really. After that first comment, there's been a steep dropoff in entertainment value so I'm just going to chop the head off the idiot serpent and move on.

the best way to deal with them is to pull up your pants and ignore them.

You can make it so comments are pre-approved by yourself before they are posted.

It's not someone from here. He had a hunch who it is (and why), and I think he is right, although I don't know for sure.

Weird, I haven't changed the comment settings yet and Shelby was able to post one no problem.

Perfectly legal and ethical. When you post, your IP you post from is recorded as part of the post itself. If you were slick you could spoof it, but that's pretty darn difficult.

If someone uses the site, they agree that the info could be stored, and retrieved, by those with access to do it. If they don't agree to that, they shouldn't use the site.

I mean, we rarely look at the stuff. We generally only looked at IPs when we were banning spammers, but we have a tool for that now, so we don't even need to.

I'd say it is def someone you know fairly well, Alex. My mind is slipping at the moment, but didn't you say before you had a nutzo ex? Maybe it's her rifting on you because you're in a better place now?

Speaking from experience, I had an ex that was so engulfed with making my life a living hell, she hacked my fb account and deleted most of the females on my friend list that weren't family after we broke up. She made fake profiles on social networking sites and bogus email accounts just to give me shit because I wouldn't show her any kind of reaction after we had broke up and I was totally fine with being away from her. (She was actually the cause of a heart condition/panic attacks when we were together, but thats a story best left for a beer or keg...)

Anyway, hope you find out who this dickbag is man. Obviously someone who wants to gain your attention and since you haven't given it, they're doing what they can to make sure you're paying attention to them if you want to or not. Which, is very highschoolish and lame of them.

It's absolutely legal, but I wont touch the second half of your question.

As long as the IP address is not used for malicious reasons (Scanning for open ports and sending false packets), there is no legal precedent set (as to my knowledge) that forbids discussing/comparing IP addresses in the United States.

Actually I don't think it's someone that knows me that well, merely someone with an internet connection who has the time to read my blog. Those that know me well could come up with far better ammo, i.e. things about me that are not explicit on my blog. The fact that no mention was made of me being unemployed or living at home (let's be honest, those are 80 mph fastballs belt high) leads me to believe it's not someone I know very well.

I don't think it's my ex, she's pretty content to embrace her dependencies on drugs and alcohol and leave me well enough alone. She's also not that smart or that subtle.

Either way I baited them for a bit to have a few comments to ensure I was blocking the correct IP, took care of it and deleted the comments. I actually didn't have to do that much since the tracking service I used also logged when they hit the "post comment" button on my blog so it was plain as day which IP was doing it. They have hopefully been silenced unless they're smart/dedicated enough to change their IP and continue.
