Post subject:  Severe weather in the south
Severe weather in the south makes my stomach churn.

Being a meteorologist on days like this is something I HATE.

We work our minds off to make our current technologies better so people can get out of the way of these things.

I can only wish my best to those in the southern states, and that they may have a speedy recovery.

Second tornado watch/warning Central NC has had in the last two weeks.

We got hit pretty hard on the 16th and a few areas got pretty destroyed.

the tuscaloosa tornado will likely go down as the first tornado since the flint/beecher tornado of 1953 to kill 100 people.

Not to sound callous, but I kind of wish some of that crazy stuff would hit raleigh a little harder, I just LOOOVE severe weather (assuming no one gets killed), crazy storms, battening down the hatches and all that. We had some wicked rain earlier, but as of yet no signs of anything serious.

im the same way. usually when i hear the tornado sirens go off, thats when i head for the roof to see whats going on.

ive seen what i believe is tornadoes but im not positive. kalamazoo was always under tornado watches in may and june. lots of bad weather over there. not as much on the east side though.

Hm...you know, the other day when the real shit was flying around here, there was this really long sort of...galactic whistle (thats the only way I can describe it), it was eerie as hell and I couldnt even tell what direction it was coming from. it wasnt that loud, but it was clear enough, maybe that's what that was.

tornado sirens are fuckin creepy. worst is when you hear them in the middle of the night.

Well apparently I live in "Tornado Alley" in SW Ontario but I have never ever have seen a funnel cloud in my life, all we get is massive ass thunderstorms

It's getting bad up here now. Driving ban in the city of Niagara Falls. The Airport, which is about 3/4 of a mile from my house, recorded an 83 MPH gust.

We actually got a few tornadoes in the area. Almost never see them up this way. I remember around age 8-10 (1988-1990 or so) on the way to the orthodontist I saw two waterspouts (tornadoes on the water) right next to each other over Lake Erie. That was the only time I've actually seen one in person.

But still, some other parts of the country got it bad. My prayers go out to everyone affected.

water spouts are non-tornadic tornadoes... if that makes sense. that cant really come ashore.

Not all of them are. Depends on their formation. You can have a mesocyclone based tornado over water and that can come to land, but it's rare as far as I know.

yeah, the ones we typically see on the great lakes are non tornadic. i always wanted to be on lake michigan when one spins up and swim to it to see what its like. most are weak and wont really hurt you.
