I guess this is probably going to be geared more towards XC and Squanto, but I'm going to finish my bachelor's program in 6 weeks. Should I continue on with the Master's degree, and even set my sights at PhD? I know in IT that certifications end up really showing you're worth your salt, my real concerns lie in my belief that IT support is going to shrink again as we move towards data center/hosted solutions/"mainframe" infrastructure, and that a PhD would be a nice ace in the hole, so to speak. I just don't want to start down that path and "overqualify" myself...

I am of the belief that a degree in IT doesn't stay useful. Just like 20 years ago when IT students were taught about punch cards, I don't want my degree to end up becoming irrelevant.

IMO, IT is a service based occupation.
Most major corporations are heading towards a utility model.
You have two paths grasshopper:
- make the new paradigm work for whomever pays you
- milk the old paradigm for whomever pays you

Get paid

/really though, years of experience are worth more than years of school...get to it.

I would think some employers wouldn't even look at you if you had a PhD since they'd automatically assume your salary demands would be outside of their budget.

Your degree just gets you past the resume screeners in this field. Your experience is what gets you hired.

lol, kinda what I thought too. The only thing a PhD would give me is possibly the option to teach if shit goes downhill.

Not that it's terribly related, but my dad (electrical engineer) has found this to be true doing recruiting work/conducting interviews for his employer. He didn't ever discount anyone for that reason, but saw a ton of HR folk/hiring managers do it.

Is there anything wrong with only listing the Bachelor's or Master's degree (as required) for positions? I tailor my resume to every job I apply to anyways...
