I live ~90 miles from that epicenter and I was on the third floor of a building when it hit. Holy hell I was scared.

<Insert California earthquake veteran snide comment here>

I love earthquakes personally but that's probably because I've never been in one that knocked over the building I was in.

Earthquakes have their own personalities too...some violently pop, some roll, some sway. I'll take a 5.8 roller over a 5.8 violent rattle any day.

It's just not normal here, and deserves as much shock as it got. We all know Cali residents get quakes and are used to it, but here it's a shocker and scarier than hell when you have NEVER experienced one before.

high up in building that may not be highly quake rated doesn't help anything either.

Never felt it here. About 160 miles from it.

I never did, but my mom and sister felt it.

Well I felt my first earthquake sitting in Lewiston-Porter high school.
I agree they're not common, but they're also not unheard of.

As a matter of fact, the Clarendon-Linden fault bisects WNY and has shown considerable activity in the past.

You're right about being in a multi story building...scariest place to ride out an earthquake.
My wife has a terrifying story about being on the 15th floor of a 32 story building in downtown LA during a 6.7. The floor was shifting laterally 5 feet in each direction.

Oh...if you like feeling uneasy, one of these signs is on my workplace

it's one of the most active and potentially dangerous fault lines in the east
