Hey guys. I got braces in March of last year and I'm having serious issues. I had Herbst appliances on to bring my jaw forward and now that my bite aligns a bit better my top teeth rest on my bottom braces. I'm 32 and have TMJ and they knew that shit going in. Now I've grinded against the bottom brackets and have chipped my front top incisor and both k-9's. My orthodontist is an apathetic prick to boot. He seems annoyed when I come in with questions. Any advice?

Edit: Exactly why we need an age limit on this site. What a joke.

I would try going to a regular dentist. Maybe you need one of those appliances that stop you from grinding your teeth at night.

I have had night guards for years but the problem is that my braces are still so active that the guard doesn't fit after a short while. And they run around 300 bucks or more a pop. I'm wondering if I should get them taken off or even sue this guy.

damn man, that really sucks. When I had braces I used a lot of that waxy stuff to cover the sharp parts of the braces to protect myself, perhaps that would work? Did your orthodontist give you anything like that? I used to use some warmed candle wax when I ran out of the stuff they gave me.
Good luck dude.

If your braces are chipping your teeth and your orthodontist doesn't give a shit it's time to find a new orthodontist.
I'm sure there's one who would care and would appreciate your business.

Growing up, you'll hear about a lot of things. I've been considering getting mine put on again - I didn't get a retainer or anything when they took mine off about 12 years ago.

My dad and my step-dad had braces in their late thirties/early forties. I felt old getting them when I was 19. I'm glad I got them sooner rather than later, but I think it's never too late to take care of your teeth. Some people don't have the luxury of having insurance or their parents pay for them when they're young and have no choice but to do it when they're older.

Yup. My parents couldn't afford it. I've never had a cavity and have healthy teeth, just crooked ones.

Could you get an athletic mouth guard for $10-$15 that you can boil and reboil and fit to your teeth as necessary? It might deteriorate over time, but it sounds like it would last longer at less cost. Problem is they tend to be pretty cumbersome and would probably take a lot of getting used to.

I grind during the day too. Before it was fine to grind a bit when it was just tooth on tooth but now it's tooth on bracket. I'm just going to say fuck it and get them off.

Sounds like you've got a really bad Orthodontist. Do you by any chance have a dental teaching school nearby? A good teacher would probably LOVE to work on you- it would be a fantastic lesson for his students. And it's not like it's your fault, so you don't need to feel embarrassed or anything. My daughter goes to a teaching school and one of the Faculty does all her work (they need to stay current). It might be worth a shot.
