Post subject:  Visiting NYC for the first time! Have a few questions.

So i'm going to visit my ex in NYC 3 weekends from now. She goes to Pratt. While I'm there I'm going to take a day to go visit schools and anything I would want to see that she probably wouldn't. My first question is about schools in general. I'm a Civil engineering major and I'm hoping to transfer to a school in NYC with a good engineering program. Problem is, I live in Cali and know nothing about the schools out there. If any of you know schools I could try looking into I'd appreciate it!

Another question. Is there anything hockey related that I should see while I'm there?

This trip is scaring the shit out of me considering the real reason I'm going but hey even if it doesn't work out I'm hoping I can get something out of it.

I'm asking here because you guys are the closest people to NYC I know haha. I know a lot of you probably don't know either but just hoping someone knows something.

Thanks everyone!

I got nothing on both your questions. The only big schools I know are in NYC are NYU and Colombia. I don't think either is particularly known as an engineering school, but I could be misinformed. Colombia may be a great engineering school for all I know. Going there might not be within everyone's reach though. But I'm sure there are many smaller schools (like Pratt-size or smaller) that I know nothing about.

For hockey, there's Madison Square Garden. No games there over the weekend of Oct 8, and the Rangers play in Long Island Oct 15. Maybe you could catch that if you're there that weekend.

Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Sex are pretty awesome.

Stuuuu already mentioned NYU and Colombia, there's also Fordham University. Not too familiar with engineering though.

The NHL Store on 6th Avenue near Times Square is pretty neat.

As for other things to do in New York. It's always fun to catch a comedy show. If you're into art there's MoMA, I think they have student discounts (I think it's free if you're a SUNY student). If you're into theatre you could try and get rush tickets to a broadway show, sometimes you can get pretty cheap tickets to some great shows.

The 9/11 Memorial is now also open to the public, from what I've seen it looks like a real nice place to reflect and pay your respects. You can also see the construction of the new World Trade Center buildings.

New York is a great city to just "wing it" too...there's just so much going on that you're bound to stumble across something worthwhile. SoHo, Greenwich Village, and Times Square are good starting points.

Here's a list of schools that offer civil engineering majors in the NYC area:

I'm not sure if you can see that, but if you can't, go to College Board's website and check it out there. NYC is awfully expensive, so I hope your parents help you out or you can get private loans because it won't be cheap. :)

Thank you for that! Actually found a school I'm probably going to check out while I'm there! And yeah I'm putting myself through college so Loans/Financial Aid are going to be be necessary. At this point NYC is where I want to go to school, not necessarily where I'll go. Gunna have to weigh the costs and everything else before I choose. Really hoping I find a way to make it work tho.

Good luck dude. NYC is awesome, I would go there in a heartbeat if it was relevant to what I'm going for, but Buff State offers one of the best communication programs in the country and it's pretty cheap, relatively speaking of course. Hope everything works out for you.
