Anyone have any good ways of cleaning/de-stinking hockey equipment? I used to lay it out and Febreeze the hell out of it but thats not really cutting it anymore. |

Wash it. Do a hose and some soap, then let it dry outside. Or say fuck it and not care. Guess it's different for a goalie then skater, I can't smell my gear much unless I'm sitting still. |

I wouldn't recommend not cleaning it...other than the fact that hockey equipment may be the foulest smelling sporting equipment out there, the bacteria on the equipment can also cause staph infections so I think it's a pretty good idea to wash it. You can probably wash it with water and a proprietary sanitizer...unless it's leather of course. |

Soap and water, along with air drying, is usually a good solution. Will never totally get the stink out, but that will never happen with hockey equipment. Never cleaning it is just asking for infection, and frankly pretty fucking disgusting. |

We clean hockey equipment where I work and they actually do a really good job deodorizing everything. |

I use the washing machine and let everything air dry. For my gloves, which are particularly terrible, I used foot odor powder. It didn't make the gloves stop smelling completely but it did stop my hands from smelling after using the gloves. |

This will solve all your problems. Noticed you were in Chicago and I saw there is a store in Glenview - Offensive Zone. Don't know how close it is but I hope it helps. |

I've taken my gear to a laundry mat and washed it all in commercial washers and dryers. I've done this multiple times with no issues. Shinners, elbow pads, shoulder pads, socks, jersey, jock... all that stuff can go in there. The rest of it, you just have to air out. |

The only issue I've had with any gear has been my gloves. A few years ago, I had two pairs I was switching back and forth from week to week, but one pair started to bring some better luck so I stuck with them for a little while. Soon enough, they started to smell like death so I decided to give them a cleaning and figured I might as well wash the other pair as well. Lesson learned; don't wash them in the same water. I thought they had been rinsed and dried well enough but what happened next was during the next game. My hands broke out into big red blotches and started to burn like crazy and it scared the shit out of me. A quick trip to the drug store for Benadryl, next the hospital and then Canadian tire for some new gloves had me back in the game the same afternoon. Since then, I use an industrial strength spray called, "NOK-OUT" and once my gloves get that familiar funk, it's time to chuck them and get a new pair. Not taking any chances like that again. It can get expensive having to buy gloves this often, but I’d sooner keep my digits. |

You guys think that's how McKee got that staph infection by not washing his stuff? |

ironyisadeadscene wrote: buncha fucking prudes. lol I have to agree. I never washed my equipment. When my roommate back in the day told me to put it in the washing machine I humiliated him with laughter, and enjoyed it. That was just hilariously preposterous to me. I guess that was then, and this is now. However, I was always good about letting that stuff dry. Air it out immediately when you get home. One other thing - sunlight. Sunlight speeds up the drying out process, and probably kills a lot of the bacteria. |

Bacteria grows in the sunlight, bacteria likes warm moist places. Your stuff is probably riddled with more bacteria then ever. |

Put a soaking wet towel on the driveway on a hot summer day. Soon, it's DRY. Without H2O...well, it's hard to maintain cellular integrity. |
