I imagine looking on a hockey forum for sober people is like looking for clean teeth at an Oreo convention. That being said, I quit drinking and was wondering if anyone here is also in recovery. Bueller? Bueller?

What were your reasons for quitting? |

Basically my life had become a shell of what it should be. I was distant from my family, my kids and my friends. I stopped doing anything fun that I used to enjoy and I was pretty much flat lined when it came to emotions other than anger or self pity. Life was just no fun man. There is a lot more but mainly I just felt like crap emotionally and physically. I tried to cut back or quit on my own a million times and failed miserably so I checked myself into a treatment center last month. I'm just fortunate that I didn't have to lose everything to wake up. |

That's rough man. Glad you're taking serious steps. On a Big Brotheresque note, there's an ad for Sobrexa, which will get you to stop drinking in 8 weeks, on the bottom of the page. Never seen that one, but I also probably never clicked on something with sober in the title before. Google must know everything about everyone of us. But for me anyway you're right, I'm not sober. Well, I am right now just to clarify, but I do drink. |

I didn't quite, but I really don't drink. I think the last time I was drunk was game 5 vs. Boston in 2010. I like doing too many things that require a controlled body and focused mind to do it too often. |

I don't drink. I still find myself having a great time watching and attending hockey, lacrosse, and baseball games. It was really bad for my migraines and made me lose control when I did back in college. A buddy of mine quit a few years back and had a bad problem with it. It can still be a stuggle with it in some situations, but he's stuck with it and has been sober ever since. There will be some hard times dealing with it, but stick to it and you'll realize that you're much better off and there are quite a few people that support you with your decision. One of the things that he does is surround himself with people that support him; ones that aren't going to get wasted or push it on him when he's around either. Good luck with everything! |

my hubby's been sober for 8 years...and although I didn't have a problem, I pretty much quit drinking when he did. Why add to temptation? I can yell as loud at game on tv drinking a cup of coffee, or iced tea as I could with an alcoholic drink. |

man, you guys are bumming me out. theres nothing better then getting fwasted with friends and reliving the crazy shit you did the next day through story. every great story, since the BIBLE, starts out the same way: "so, we were wasted, right? and i see this...." |

I'm a fairly heavy drinker but it hasn't gotten in the way of my everyday life...yet. I'll probably need to address it at some point though. How difficult was quitting for you? It took me 3 tries and a prescription to finally stop smoking after 15 years...my willpower absolutely sucks. |

Crosscheck wrote: I'm a fairly heavy drinker but it hasn't gotten in the way of my everyday life...yet. I'll probably need to address it at some point though. yeah, basically the same answer for me. I realized the other day i'm really drinking every single day, multiple beers. I'm actually in the middle of an 'exploratory' week without drinking (ok, so maybe i'm just on the second day...) just to gauge how I feel without it. Gotta keep yourself in check, I have a fear of crossing over the line to 'alcoholic/addict' without realizing it. But man, homebrewing, having the ability to create beer I find insanely delicious is NOT helping me not be an alchy. |

Yeah I hear ya...since homebrewing is a major hobby of mine, quitting drinking would be a major lifestyle change...I've got a 2 faucet kegerator in the kitchen and a fermentation fridge / beer storage fridge in the garage that has another faucet on it. Although I suppose to any non-homebrewer, having 3 beer faucets in your house would automatically put you in the raging alcoholic category. |

My favorite is losing track of one of the four of us that went out into Canada. Three of us managed to get home after crossing back and forth over the border 2-3 times. We got separated, and the other one couldn't keep track of which country he was in, so customs didn't let him cross again. Problem was he was still in Canada. I think he got back home in the evening the next day. I might have gotton one leg over the rail on the Rainbow Bridge at one point...all in good fun of course. I was TOTALLY in control...that's how I remember it anyway. There were Canadian chicks and the casino was involved too, but I can't remember why (or I'm still sworn to secrecy). Then there's a story about puking (times 20), finding keys in a snow drift 12 blocks after losing them, playing football hungover, getting kicked out of a club or strip joint, paying for my out of town buddy to get uh, "vip" treatment at Mintz, getting stripped naked on stage at Sundowner, and dancing with the strippers on stage at Private Eyes for 30 mins after they closed (maybe because we did BYOB at last call and shared). So I really don't see the bad part in getting drunk, not yet anyway. |

ohh man you drink every day? i only drink for one reason: to get annihilated. my fav story involves college. ive told the basic story, but ill give you the whole thing. western michigan put up its first building in 1903. it still stands. its large. and abandoned. its on top of a large hill that overlooks the valley and downtown. anyways. a friend on my hockey team got broke up with, only to find his now ex staying over at a friends house with my friends room mate. so he gets drunk, and we all get drunk. he goes to confront the kid (same kid that was later my room mate and stole from us and sold weed) we decide to pull him away, and we drink on campus. we are drinking, and my friend mikey says at about 2 am: lets walk back to my place, get some beers, and drive up to east campus. we walk back to his place, and immediately get in a fight with some kids. they start shit talking us for walking through their apartments parking lot. we go at them, pushing, shoving.. i drunkenly throw a haymaker that misses so bad, everyone just laughs before we start jawing again. finally, we just leave. we go drive up to east campus, and look at east hall. this is east hall: ![]() ![]() so we walk around it, before my buddy crawls on a ledge and opens a window. moment later, he come to the door, opens it for us, and were in. so were checking out the building, using only our cell phone lights, and its all dark and its creepy as hell. were running around, and shit, and we go to the basement. were as quiet as we can be, and suddenly, we hear faint music. very faint. we all get scared, before i realize, oops, its my phone playing an MP3 (circa survive, which has some effects of someone running their finger on a crystal glass lip) so we keep running through the building, looking through storage, and we found slot cars. anyways, we come to a huge window overlooking the hill, and see people standing there. we decide to pound on the glass to scare them. we do, and they turn around. cops. they book to the front of the building, and we do too. trying to go out the front before they get there. they beat us, and we hear them at the door (we left it propped open) so we book it back the other way, and out the back doors, and run down that hill. so a while later, the cops cant find us, and we walk home, leaving my friends car there. on the way home, we walked through the parking lot of the earlier fight, and to our amusement, they left their HUGE cooler out.. i mean, it was HUGE.. so we stole it. we go back to my friends house, and everyone sleeps. the next morning, mikeys girlfriend came over and he went to show her the cooler, and when he opened it, he found me passed out inside. i guess thats where i wanted to sleep. |

Hey man, i'm curious what sort of drinking level you were at over the past year/when you made this decision. What did you drink, how much quantity, and how often? (if you dont mind getting into details) |

I have been drinking pretty much everyday for a few years. Before that I was drinking most days and harder on the weekends. There would be days that I just had three or four beers but then days I would drink a liter of Captain. I was hungover most days for the last few months and was drinking earlier and earlier. I basically drank whatever was in the house until it was gone or I had had my fill....which usually meant hammered. I'd have good weeks where I kept it in check and only got buzzed or maybe only drunk once or twice but basically i had two modes. If I controlled my drinking and tried to only have a couple, I wouldn't enjoy myself and if I enjoyed myself I couldn't control it. |

Irony - Nah I didn't drink every day, probably 3-4 weekends a month. That was back then around the Falls and Buffalo. Now where I live down south I don't have the time, the drinking buddies, or really the chance to have much fun without possible job-related consequences. Not that I would do illegal stuff (DWI, fights) but people talk and I can't afford that. But that's a good story though. That's the kind of mostly harmless stuff people should do when they're drunk. Being sober and on-duty when I was a street cop, I had the chance to search out several old creepy buildings from basement to attic. Woulda been more fun with friends, beer, and a ouija board or something stupid to screw with them, but I have to take the small amounts of fun I can get these days. |

As a child of two alcoholic parents, I'll say this much. If it got to a point you needed to seek help, you did the right thing. Stay strong man. |
