Gov. Paterson is set to propose legalizing ultimate fighting and its controversial steel-cage matches to help wrestle the state's fiscal woes.

I am a fan of the UFC and would love to see it come to Buffalo some day. I don't know exactly how much of an impact it would have on the budget though. Has Paterson ever seen an MMA fight?

<Insert tacky blind joke here.>

I give Patternson a little credit for coming forth with ideas, but it doesn't matter because the state legislature is the bigger problem.

Ok, ok, caught my breathe, is there such a thing as brail in the ring? Me thinks the Gov. might want to take out additional personal injury insurance.

Do it already.

I know that Squanto would be right next to me if Rashad Evans ever got to fight in Buffalo :D

Wasn't Josh Koschek a wrestler at UB or something too. I like Evans, can't stand Koshek though. Either way, two local guys on a card in Buffalo would be excellent. Throw GSP on the card and you may get some extra fans from Canada to ensure a sell out.

I liked MMA as "UFC", but it was because it was separate, an event, and basically inferior to boxing(at least as a fledgling sport). I still like it, but I haven't strayed from my naturalist ways yet. My only bitch on MMA, and I haven't watched much lately, is the beating necessary for a stoppage. If these refs can't tell when a guy is out for 10 seconds, then they need to work at Wal-Mart. I like "the beat down" just like anyone else, but after ya watch them a few thousand times, it gets a little creepy on ya. I love boxing because it's a man's ability to inflict his will on another man's. The violence is secondary.

As I said though, I'm a fan of both.

I don't see it the same way at all. I think the MMA referees do a bang up job of protecting the fighters. Those "beat downs" you see rarely do any major damage to the fighter. Usually it's just the guy getting beat is in a position he can't get out of, and can't mount any offense from. The guy in control just keeps wailing away, even though his strikes are almost entirely blocked.

The reason I prefer MMA to boxing is there's just so much more you need to be good at. Your options are so much more varied. So many different ways to win a fight. So many more close calls where the momentum of a fight can swing back and forth. Yeah, you've got the occassional clunker where it's basically one guy lying on top of another for the whole fight, but you also see all kinds of clutching and grabbing in boxing which is boring. When guys clutch in MMA, there's all kinds of stuff you can do in that position.

Well, as I said, I haven't watched a lot lately, but the few I've seen were pretty bad. I know when a punch is "almost entirely blocked" or not, and also when a guy is done or not. These guys just weren't counted out soon enough. It seemed almost violently wrong to me.

MMA:
If the guy gets fucked up enough, fight stops
If the guy can't counter-attack, fight stops
If the guy gets knocked out, fight stops

Boxing:
If the guy gets fucked up enough, he keeps getting fucked up
If the guy can't counter attack, he keeps getting fucked up
If the guy gets knocked out, as long as he can get back up before a ten count, he keeps getting fucked up

Advantage: MMA!

(But seriously, for anyone who thinks boxing is safer than MMA doesn't do their homework.)

I got no issue with safety. If you get in the ring, it's your ass, and I don't care what happens to it, but there is a bit of morbidity in watching a half conscious guy on the ground getting his head clobbered mercilessly and unnecessarily. As I said, it isn't the violence that I like(or dislike) about boxing anyways.

I haven't said anything about violence. I'll be the first to agree MMA is (world's and away) more violent, but both sports have fights where a dominant athlete is imposing his will on his opponent.

And there's more than just a bit of morbidity in watching a guy with his eyes swollen shut, a goose-egg on his forehead, and mouth hanging agape who keeps getting punched in the face when he's clearly 95% out on his feet.

Your arguments against MMA (well, more like in favor of boxing) hold no water, dude.

I suggest you check out the WEC broadcasts on VS - it's UFC's sister company and you don't have to shell out $45 an event to see it.

I wasn't even making an argument for boxing phil. Boxing just happens to be my cup of tea is all(to each his own). I was just making a comment about the last 2 KO's I saw where the ref let an unconscious guy get hit for 10 seconds or more after he was already out on the ground. It disturbed me a bit(and yes, it was on WEC).
