Sources: Chargers eye trade scenarios
By Chris Mortensen

With LaDainian Tomlinson's career in San Diego declared all but over and Darren Sproles facing free agency, the Chargers are exploring possible trade scenarios that include dealing cornerback Antonio Cromartie to acquire a running back, according to league sources.

Cromartie is a four-year starter, a former first-round draft pick and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2007 when he intercepted 10 passes. Sources have said he has fallen out of favor with the Chargers, who also have a pair of corners in Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason who were first-round picks.

The Chargers' most pressing offseason need is in the offensive backfield. Tomlinson declared shortly after the season that he believed his nine-year career with the Chargers is finished. He expects to be released shortly. Sproles is a pending restricted free agent who would be due $7.3 million in 2010 if the Chargers tender him a contract, a 10 percent increase over his 2009 franchise-tag salary of $6.67 million. Sproles has said he intends to test the market but expressed a preference to remain in San Diego.

Among the teams that have running back depth are the Dallas Cowboys with Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice at the position. Several teams are looking for cornerback depth, including the Green Bay Packers, sources said.

The Chargers may be willing to trade Cromartie for a draft choice that could give them more flexibility to select at least one running back in this year's draft, sources said.

We also have a GM who is familiar with San Diego. I say get a third team involved say the Pats or the Pack, who can use cromartie and establish a three way deal where lynch goes to san Diego, Cromartie to one of the above and a pick hopefully a first or second to the Bills. This years draft has some good RBs including Spiller and Gerhart. Lets face it we need a quality Left tackle, possibly a QB, a true linebacker or 2, and a nose tackle plus more. We also rid of the headache that lynch is becoming.

Hmmmmmm, sounds like we could get a nice CB out of this.

Let mister Lynch have a new chance to play elsewhere.

I'd take Cromartie for Lynch... a career trouble maker for a decent CB, win. We wouldn't have to worry about our pass defense for years to come and could keep focusing on important matters like getting an O-line.

i see it as a win win if you keep Cromartie or proceed to trade him for a pick. I mean it's like they said on WGR last season with all the injuries it would be extremely helpful to have that depth at CB, and not just rookies. i mean if i remember correctly Cromartie was a first round pick 19th overall in 2006.

Side note: I had to write that title i mean it fits the avatar plus it's funny. who doesn't like to laugh.

It looks like the chargers are considering dealing with the Lions.

Chargers, Lions discussing trade to send Cromartie to Detroit

By Jason La Canfora | NFL.com

The Detroit Lions have been in discussions with the San Diego Chargers about acquiring cornerback Antonio Cromartie in a trade, a league source said Sunday.

Tackles: 33
Interceptions: 3

The Chargers have been shopping Cromartie, who starred for them a few seasons back but has fallen out of favor. There was little interest around the NFL, but the Lions are intrigued and have been in contact with the Chargers.

The former Pro Bowl cornerback told SIRIUS NFL Radio hosts Bryan McGovern and Jim Miller on Monday that he wasn't thrilled with the way the Chargers play defense and it could be time for a change.

"It may be time to move on," Cromartie said. "I have complained to the coaches about certain stuff, about the way we play, and they know that. But if it's time to part ways and that's in the Lord's will, then that's what's got to happen. But I would love to continue to finish out either my contract or my career in San Diego."

Cromartie, a first-round draft pick by the Chargers in 2006, posted an NFL-high 10 interceptions in 2007, but he has just five since.

If traded, Cromartie would join running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who was released Monday, in leaving San Diego. The Chargers also plan to let Darren Sproles test free agency.

"I think they're going to make moves this year, especially for guys that are going to be expecting big contracts and things like that coming up," Cromartie said. "If that's what they want to do, especially with the trade rumors that I'm hearing, that's part of the business, that's how it goes. If I'm there next year, I'm going to play to the best of my ability. If I'm not, I got to play somewhere else and help that organization out the best way I can."

No trades can become official until the start of the league year, March 5.

I don't like Cromartie, I think he gambles too much. Not a lock down corner by any means.

Lions unlikely to trade for Cromartie
Posted: March 1st, 2010 | Jason La Canfora | Tags: Adam Jones, Antonio Cromartie, Detroit Lions, San Diego Chargers

The Lions had spoken with the Chargers over the weekend about a possible trade for former first-round pick Antonio Cromartie. But, despite needing help in its secondary, Detroit is unlikely to consummate a deal when the league year begins March 5.

The Lions have a deep need at corner and Cromartie, who has fallen out of favor in San Diego, could be a free-agent option if he is released.

Adam “Pacman” Jones, who recently worked out for the Bengals and is planning to showcase himself for NFL scouts March 19, could be a strong possibility as well.

Jones was a first-round pick of the Titans when Lions coach Jim Schwartz was the defensive coordinator with Tennessee. The Lions are likely to have scouts heading to Jones’ workout in a few weeks.

I would, if we rid of lynch. i mean we play the jets twice it's like if we went after wilfork, we play the pats twice too. Just say hey how would you like to show the team that wouldn't pay you or cut you how much they screwed up. Though it is a very deep running back class.

I want Jones, we can trade Lynch for random pick/player and have a great 1/2 punch for another year or two before we draft another RB.

(WGR 550) -- The Chargers and Jets have reached an agreement in principle to send cornerback Antonio Cromartie to New York.

Cromartie, a 2007 All-Pro, will partner with Darrelle Revis in New York. Some reports are saying the compensation is a 2011 draft pick, but the details haven't formally been released.

Other reports have the Chicago Bears heavily recruiting defensive end Julius Peppers, fellow end Aaron Kampman looking at Seattle and former Packers offensive tackle Chad Clifton talking with the Redskins.

Also "changing addresses":

-- Linebacker Gary Brackett is staying with the Colts on a new five-year deal.

-- The Chicago Bears will sign tight end Brandon Manumaleuna to a five-year deal pending a physical, according to the Chicago Tribune. Manumaleuna has played with the Chargers and the Rams.

-- Wide-out Nate Burleson has signed a five-year, $25 million deal with the Detroit Lions.

-- Safety Bryan Scott has re-upped with the Buffalo Bills for two years.

I suppose I wouldn't want Cromartie and his 7 kids either...
