Here is an interesting story from NPR asking why the majority of American hockey players shoot right-handed, but the majority of Canadians are lefties. Curiously, even though most Canadians shoot left-handed, hockey supply stores still sell more right-handed sticks.

It's all that socialism in the water supply...wait...what?

Interesting theory about Canadian kids starting younger but I don't buy it...I bet most guys in the NHL all started at a very young age regardless of nationality.

I saw the same article in the New York Times recently. I'm with Canada on this one though. I'm right handed, but I do most two-handed sports with a left handed grip. Baseball, hockey, golf, have a two-handed backhand in tennis, etc. Just the way my dad taught me to swing a baseball bat for some reason.

I'm right handed and most likely would shoot to the right also.

I've done everything else right handed so hockey wouldn't be much different to me either.

No, no, no. Americans are right, Canadians are wrong. Get it straight.

This makes 3 people I know now, who do the same. My bro, a good bud of mine and now you, Squanto. And it boggles my mind as to how you guys do it! I tried once to take a slapshot left handed in practice.

Damn near pulled my shoulder out of the sockett! I do everything with my right handed-ness. Hockey, baseball, golf, shovel snow. But since I broke my left hand years back, I have more power in that hand than anything. Go figer :P

what i had heard is that Canadians teach their kids to hold the stick with one hand in their strong hand, which is typically the right. this way, the stick doesn't need to be transferred when skating down ice.the top hand (often the dominant) will be easier to carry the stick one handed, and by blade curves, means they shoot left handed.

Good description Pat. This topic could get deep.

What if EVERYONE shot left? Ya, too predictable, so some go right, right? Wrong!, no wait, right. I think. Aww, I dunno, I'll just blog something. lol

I write and throw with my right hand but I am left handed in sports like hockey baseball golf. But in tennis I hit with my right hand. And then my best friend writes with his left hand and plays all sports right handed.

I write and throw left handed, but I swing right handed in hockey, golf, and baseball.
