And trust me i know all the jokes. i actually walked into walmart and a worker was bringing in one of those electric shopping carts. He said, "I think I'm ready to try out for Nascar." I replied by saying, "What's under the hood of that ride, and have you mastered the left turns with your ride?" He just laughed. What better than to start off a new thread with a funny story.

I used to watch NASCAR, but recently haven't watched too much of it.

I'm more into Drag Racing, F1, Drifting, or Le Mans, but none of them come on TV much.

Poker is a sport. It's a mental sport, but a sport nonetheless.

woah woah woah. sport is defined by athletic activity between various teams and individuals. what cards you get is not athetics. its a hobby, and activity. not a sport.

Well not to be a dick, and this isn't directed at anyone, but if you dont like NASCAR, and you don't think it's a sport, simply dont come into the thread.

I'm not a big fan of many of the things posted here, so I ignore them.

------------------

That being said. HUGE Kasey Kane fan, really hope he puts together a great season this year.

Depends on your definition of sport.

To some, the standard is a physical activity. To others, any competition with a defined set of rules can be a sport.

I used to share your view, but after some marathon hours playing poker my view has changed a bit.

im gonna comment on this, cos i was one who said it

i was just joking on it

i dont find it that interesting, but it is a sport

1. does it involve some sort of pyhsical stamina [X]

2. Does it involve strategy [X]

3. Can it be measured by some quantive goal(times, points, inches, feet, metres) [X]

i dont even include golf and foot racing as sport. as i think sport is when two or more sides compete against each other directly, and actively try to prevent the other side from beating you. im just tough on it. with golf, you try to outshoot someone, but they cant block your shot or something. thats just me. however, this could be a very interesting discussion if had with respect.

that is a team sport, not the definition of a sport

While I can see why you might question poker, I guess I just don't agree with your exclusion of physical activities that don't involve direct physical challenges.

Golf is the most difficult sport I've ever played, bar none. Hockey is harder physically, but the mental prowess needed to be good at golf is insane.

NASCAR, well those drivers lose around 15 pounds sitting in a car for 3 hours on end.

They are driving inches from each other, with around 800HP of raw power to the wheels and a 1.5 ton machine.

It's physical, they don't have any luxuries of a regular car so the steering is rigid and the concentration even higher.

I've watched some NASCAR before, and haven't been able to get into it. I LOVE watching ALMS and some Grand-Am. I can't wait for the 24 hours of LeMans this season and the battle between Audi and Peugeot.

I'm still looking for someone to hitch my bandwagon to all these years after Dale died. Been steadily losing interest since.

You don't count foot racing as a sport? As in running? Fine, then I don't count a goaltender as an athlete, I mean, all you do is get in the way of a puck, it doesn't take any real stamina or strength.

Agreed. I like Robby Gordon a lot. Unfortunately "Good" and "Interesting" are mutually exclusive in NASCAR. No one since Dale has had both in great quantity.

Is Jimmie Johnson even remotely interesting? No. Unfortunately NASCAR neuters much of driver's personality out of fear of "offending sponsors."

I don't really care much on the definition of sports anymore. Things are hard and people compete in them, enough said.
