If you have Showtime I recommend that you catch the four part history of the AFL called Full Color Football. It is a terrific documentary on the history of the AFL from its founding in 1960 until the merger with the NFL in 1970. This is more than just a documentary about football. It puts the AFL rivalry with the NFL in a historical context, weaving in the space race, the civil rights movement, the war in Vietnam, and the counter-culture movement. It was also great seeing the old AFL Bills, who were the one AFL team that was considered the most like those teams in the NFL - hard-nosed, smash mouth football. There are a couple of clips on the Showtime website, but they don't really give you a feel for the program. http://sports.sho.com/full-color-football.html |
