OL Smith visits Bills
Chris Brown, Lead Journalist
Posted 3 hours ago
AA
The Bills lined up their first free agent visit of the NFL signing period on the same day the market opened as offensive lineman Wade Smith arrived at One Bills Drive Friday.

Smith (6’4”, 296) is an eight-year veteran that has played mostly guard and center in his time in the league. He has 34 starts in his career and spent the last two seasons in Kansas City where he made 16 of those starts serving mainly at right guard.

Buffalo’s coaching staff is very familiar with Smith’s abilities as Bills offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris coached him the past two seasons with the Chiefs, while Gailey was his offensive coordinator in 2008.

Smith is also very familiar with the AFC East having been a former third-round pick of the Miami Dolphins (2003) where he played his first four seasons in the league before signing with the New York Jets as a free agent in 2006.

The 28-year old is a capable starter and reliable insurance at both the guard and center positions with Eric Wood still rehabbing from leg surgery and no viable backup center behind starter Geoff Hangartner on the roster.

I think the Bills take off sunday's as there is never anything new added to the website on sunday. Ha serves a double meaning.

I think most fans would appreciate if the bills would stop picking up and looking into ex- kansas city staff.

Tebow to Workout for Bills

Joe Buscaglia Reporting
[email protected]

Arguably the most celebrated football player in college football history is going to get a closer look from the Buffalo Bills.

NFL.com's Gil Brandt reports that the Bills will conduct a private workout to see University of Florida star quarterback Tim Tebow up close and personal.

The workout will occur after Tebow's March 17th pro day on an unidentified date. Tebow will also do a private workout for the Seattle Seahawks as well.

Much has been made about Tebow's delivery and how he's trying to change it. He chose not to throw at the combine and will debut it at his pro day, with an emphasis on keeping the football at shoulder pad level throughout the delivery.

In preparation for his pro day, Tebow has been working with four former NFL offensive coaches, including Sam Wyche and current Montreal Alouettes head coach Marc Trestman.

Porter and the Bills - A Match?

Joe Buscaglia Reporting
[email protected]

Volatile. Brash. Self-centered. Arrogant.

Any and all of these words can be heard when listening to public opinion on former Miami Dolphins outside linebacker Joey Porter. But the one thing that can't be denied, despite his character flaws, is the production he provides on the field.

Many different facets should be considered when the thought of bringing in a personality of that nature in to a locker room that has yet to form an identity with a brand new coaching staff and so many new pieces to the puzzle.

The biggest question is obvious. Is Porter worth the hassle?

My answer? Absolutely and unequivocally, yes.

The argument for Porter is a strong case in my estimation. The team switching to the 3-4 defensive scheme is certainly at the forefront of my reasoning. Porter could help aid the transition, especially when none of the projected outside linebackers have dealt with the coverage aspect of the position at length.

Porter's numbers speak for themselves. In the past two seasons, Porter racked up a giant total of 26.5 sacks in 30 starts. Regardless of some having the opinion that Porter has "lost a step," Porter's nine sacks in 2009 was only one shy of matching Aaron Schobel last season.

Now with Schobel in limbo on whether or not he'll retire from the game altogether, the Bills could potentially lose their only real threat of getting to the quarterback. Chris Kelsay, Ryan Denney and Aaron Maybin combined for seven sacks last year. Not a very good omen for the future.

I wouldn't be shocked to see the name Chris Kelsay with the word "cut" at some point before the season, because he's not a great fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker. Aaron Maybin is a work in progress, and Ryan Denney has already become an unrestricted free agent.

So with all that uncertainty, it would just make absolute sense to bring in someone like Porter, who has the extensive experience in a 3-4 defense, and has the numbers to back that very experience up. Don't forget, there is a tie-in with Porter and the Bills.

Defensive coordinator George Edwards has spent the past few seasons in Miami as the linebacker coach, and worked directly with Porter. This will be the make or break for any potential talk of bringing Porter to Western New York.

If Edwards feels the same as much of the Dolphins organization about wanting to be rid of Porter from the locker room, then there's no way in hell anything will get close to completed. But if he doesn't feel the same, then what are the Bills waiting for?

They need as much help as they can get in switching to the 3-4. Even if it's only a one-year contract and they find out Maybin is the real deal and that Schobel wants to play and can man the outside linebacker role just fine, I still believe the Bills should not close themselves off from a player like that just based on reputation.

He brings a working knowledge of the very system that will be implemented in Buffalo, and he can also help the young Aaron Maybin getting acclimated with his new role. I'm not sure the word 'mentor' should be used with a player like Porter, but he certainly won't be a hindrance to Maybin's progress.

Granted, it's a very strong and negative reputation, but I think we can throw that whole "character" aspect right out the window based on players added in recent history.

Despite that very reputation of Porter, the only thing that I'm concerned about is if he can help the Bills be competitive in 2010. If that 'off year' in 2009 consists of nine sacks in just fourteen games I have just one other question.

Where do I sign up?

Joey Porter would be a great addition. WGR was talking about the possibility of getting Tim Tebow. I have a problem with that. Seeing that Tebow is a work in progress it would be unwise to draft him. The Bills already have and had work in progress Quarter Backs. Edwards, Losman, Johnson & Brohm come to mind. But if Tebow turns out to be a hidden jem for some other team it would be a huge kick in the ass. I label Tebow as hidden jem thinking he won't go in the first round or second, seeing that his throwing is in question.
Back to the defense. Kelsay moving to Linebacker? If Schobel does the same or retires who will play Defensive End? Well, if I had to guess Stroud, McCargo (if he's still with the team) & Johnson. But who does that leave for Nose Tackle? Well, Williams & Favorite will work for now.

This is just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Mark, what do you think about Dan LeFevour instead of Tim Tebow as the Bills' possible draft pick for cube? I've been on the LeFevour bandwagon all season and would love to see him selected by the Bills.

The draft is very deep in DT's there are a few nose tackles there as well. They need more than 7 picks. how can you fix a team as bad as the bills are with 7 picks. That maybin pick is really biting the bills in the ass now. they could have had a OT. I as well am seeing tebow as too much of a work in progress. I mean we have Kansas City rejects as coach and OC. if we had a guy like Trestman, A qb groomer on staff i'd be more inclined to take a tebow. but we don't

Report: Bills Sign OL Cornell Green

WGR News Reporting
NFL Network is reporting that the Bills have signed OL Cornell Green to a 3-year contract worth $9 million. Green paid a visit to Orchard Park on Monday afternoon and, apparently, liked the fit.

Green is a 10-year NFL veteran who spent the past 3 years in Oakland, starting in all 38 games in which he appeared. He can play both left and right tackle.

Green is 6-foot-6 and 315 pounds. He played his college ball at Central Florida.

Former Bill Johnathon Scott has signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

to be honest, I've only just now heard of Dan LeFevour, but looking at his stats he could be a good fit, still a late round pick. But not knowing what kind offense the Bills are planning to run kind of puts a giant question mark on all of the Quarter Backs in the draft pool.

I'd be happy with either, I'm fairly certain that LeFevour is a mobile guy and Gaily (Sp?) has said that he likes mobile QB's... Just as long as we can get a OT and/or D lineman first.

And getting a Raiders reject? facepalm.

I know the next year there are some good qb's if we can trade back and grab another second next year or a first next year. Pittsburgh still needs help on special teams and we have a disgruntal punt returner. that second might come in handy this year. I mean the number one projected NT in the draft is looking to go second round.

if the bills do draft Tebow it will be because they are looking for another money scheme. I would go OT, maybe trade to get another second, and go nose tackle and ILB. you need to worry about the line. like i've said before you could but abe vigoda behind a competent offensive line and even he will be able to complete a pass.

Losers
1. Buffalo Bills: New general manager Buddy Nix and coach Chan Gailey aren't exactly off to a scintillating start in giving long-suffering Bills fans any hope that their regime is going to bring an end to a 10-year postseason drought. It's true that the Bills have far too many needs than can be fixed in one offseason, but they are conspicuous by their relative inactivity beyond signing not-so-special, free-agent offensive tackle Cornell Green. Green could be a starter for the Bills, but that's less a reflection of how good he is than a sign of how desperate the Bills are for offensive line help. This team clearly seems focused on keeping its costs down -- which every team is able to do without a spending floor in place -- and doing everything it can to get better through the draft.

ranked number one losers from free agency, but i think he could mean for the whole off season. http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d ... nfirm=true

they also signed a defensive end.

my only problem is that Denver's defense went from good to crap in the end of the season but it is looking very much like they are going after an offensive tackle or QB with the first overall pick.

Culpepper wants to talk with Bills

Nick Mendola

[email protected]

(WGR 550) -- At 33-years-old, Daunte Culpepper is five years removed from his days as a statistical star signal caller, but his confidence is just as high as it was when he tossed 39 touchdowns in the 2004-05 campaign.

The former Viking, Dolphin, Raider and Lion and current free agent told ESPN's Tim Graham that he feels he can still start in the league. He also wants to contend for the Bills starting quarterback spot.

"I would love to talk to Buffalo," Culpepper said. "I don't know if they'd have an open mind, but I'd love to talk to them. I would love to have a chance to compete there. Give me the opportunity. I can be the guy."

Culpepper appeared in 31 games over the past five seasons, throwing for 5,555 yards with 20 touchdowns and 32 interceptions.

Earlier Monday, Bills head coach Chan Gailey said he wasn't sure if Buffalo's Week One starter is currently on the roster.
