the sabres are 4 points away from clinching. ottawa and buffalo are tied in wins, and they hold the head to head tie breaker.

Okay, if the Sabres get eight points in any fashion, they clinch the division. If they get seven points, and Ottawa loses a single game, even in OT, the Sabres clinch.

Eight games to get eight points.

I could sit here and do crazy math to figure out tiebreakers in outrageous situations, but then things are just getting too convoluted. Win every other game, at least, and you've got the division.

Consider me stupid... but how are we only 4 points away from clinching right now? Ottawa has played 76 games with 87 points gained, meaning they have a potential point total of 99 at seasons end.

Doesn't that mean that as of now, we would have to secure at least 100 points for the division title? If that is correct, that would mean that we need a total of 8 points to clinch.

If they manage to win against Ottawa, they only need to pick up four points in addition to that to lock the division up.

if Ottawa wins out they'll be at 99. so like Rud said, we need 8 points to clinch. We can max out at 108 points but 100 is our magic number right now

Washington needs one more point to clinch the Eastern conference by the way.

Jersey and Pittsburgh each need one more point so Philly couldn't win their division.

Ottawa needs 5 points to clinch a playoff spot, Montreal needs 10, Boston needs 12 and Philly needs 12 to clinch.

It's also 97 to clinch in the West and only 92 to clinch in the East.
