I agree with Timbo Slice, Ruff is on the way out. Whether it be this season or in the next 2 or 3 is pretty much all that needs to be decided. As much as Ruff looks like a decent coach (and he is, by the way), as a fan my standard of measuring his success here is nothing less than a Stanley Cup.

To date, I see no Stanley Cup Banners in the rafters at HSBC, bye bye Lindy, and take Darcy with you.
Thats my take on this.

Ruff is a great coach that consistently does a bit more, with a bit less.... No he hasn't brought a cup, but look at how consistently this team has played under him... look at the play-off runs and eastern conference championship runs... Give Lindy a little more and it WILL pay-off... and I think we have some solid talent coming up, as well as in their prime... Lindy needs to stay, Id hate to see him go! Now if we could only fire Quinn....

We're about to capture our 2nd division title in 4 years, make our 3rd playoff appearance in the past 5 years, with the first two stretching all the way to the conference finals, and we're really talking about Lindy leaving?

Lindy might have not brought us a cup yet, but he sure as hell hasn't lost us any playoff series or done boneheaded things that has cost us games.

I think it's only a matter of time.

Ruff road ahead?
Interesting scenario in Buffalo where head coach Lindy Ruff is believed to be playing out the last year of his contract. If the Sabres, locked into a playoff slot and still able to finish as high as second in the Eastern Conference, go out in the first round, Ruff might take a fair share of the heat. At the same time, the NHL's longest-serving coach to one team might be willing to try his talents elsewhere. Buffalo has long been a franchise that does just enough to sell hope to a fan base that hasn't seen a Stanley Cup since the team's inception some 40 years ago.

Buffalo is said to have an option for next season, but if Ruff really wants to go, it will be difficult to hold him to it. Whichever way it plays out, he isn't likely to be worried. He's a career coach with a stellar reputation in the NHL and he just added a gold medal to his legacy as an assistant on Canada's Olympic hockey team. Coaching likely is still in his future, but a team that might someday open the door to the general manager's office may well attract his eye, be it in Buffalo or elsewhere.

THIS IS THE YEAR MY FRIEND.

Look, you don't need to be the 84' Oilers to win a Cup in the NHL these days. There are a few crucial attributes that a team must have in order to win a Cup in todays NHL. The Sabres have all of them.

1. Goal tending.
2. Discipline.
3. Speed.
4. Opportunistic.
5. Belief.

The fans can help #5....I see NO REASON why this can't be the Sabres year. None. Lindy Ruff is doing his job at a high level, this year he will get the Cup and then the contract.

Hook, line, sinker.

Done.

idk if Discipline is something that we have conquered yet... Some players have it some dont... Could we win this year? Yes... hopefully we wont get beat but it all depends. Random factors happen all the time.

Coming from a (ex) fan of a championship team, it's great to hear :D

but I still have my worries about this team, I'm not sure we are opportunistic enough, just look at Vanek. He couldn't miss more scoring chance than that and it could cost us. But if he starts finding the back of the net, we know he can be unstoppable(beginning of last year).

Pominville though seem to have find his groove, same for Hecht and Roy.

Anyway, I believe!! ...but I expect the worst.

There's no reason that they can't compete for the cup this year.

Vanek is a puuureeeee sniper. The only problem with hsi game this season is the same problem he has had throughout his entire career. Which is, he doesn't shoot enough. For some reason snipers want to branch out their role on teams and distribute the puck more. BIG MISTAKE. He was born to be the finisher of play in hockey, he is the SNIPER. All he has to do is get selfish, embrace his role and shoot the hell out of the puck.

Having said that, he's not having an awful season, but that all gets wiped out in a few games and that's a perfect time to find yourself! :)

You're right. But I can understand why he doesn't shoot sometimes, he has missed so much goals this year, he might think it's better for him to pass. When he'll have his confidence back(I think he will), he could be an extremely important factor for the Sabres in the playoffs.

And, at least, he learned to backcheck this year. :D

Am I the only one who remembers hearing that this is going to be Lindy's last contract with the Sabres? I have a terrible memory, but I really think that when the currant contract was signed Lindy himself said that it was going to be the last one.

I definitely DON'T want Lindy to leave. When he arrived right after Nolan left I was very disappointed. Just what we needed, another ex-player trying to coach. I loved him, but really expected him to crash & burn. I am very grateful that I was wrong! I say we keep him until he is too damn old to leave town unassisted.
 ;)

I see this team as being ready for SERIOUS cup contention in 1-2 years. I don't see Ruff leaving before then since he has his heart in building this team up and he has to see that we're on the verge of something big again here. I really think with some moves and some maturity in our younger ranks we will be "Scary good" again either next season or the following. Just can't see him turning his back on that. It's not like he's super old and will be facing retirement.

?

Havinjg been a fickle fan of a team that won a championship gives you some credibility where analysis is concerned.

How that?

Northeast Division title? GREAT!!!

Cup?

3 reasons that's not likely:
Washington
New Jersey
Pittsburgh

The last 2 especially. These are organizations that know how to win championships.

That counts for a lot.

I resent being called a "fickle" fan. I'm not fickle, I just want to ride on my motorcycle. A fickle fan wouldn't leave a better team to come root for a worse one.

The Sabres most likely will have to play the Habs, Sens, and then either Wash or NJ, not all 3. Drama....geeez
