NHL.com game preview wrote:
RANGERS (36-32-10) at SABRES (43-25-10)

Last 10: New York 6-3-1; Buffalo 7-3-0

Season series: This is the fourth and final meeting. The Sabres have won two of three, including the two most-recent matchups.

Big story: The Sabres can clinch the Northeast Division with a win and perhaps even jump ahead of New Jersey for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference depending on what the Devils do in Atlanta on Tuesday. The Rangers enter the night with a chance to take over the No. 8 spot in the East, but with the Flyers and Thrashers also playing Tuesday, New York will just look to focus on its business.

Team Scope:

Rangers: It's amazing how many times this team has been left for dead, only to show signs of life. Since losing to the Bruins two weeks ago, they've ripped off a 4-0-1 streak that has them on the cusp of getting back into eighth place.

And the only reason the Rangers are still alive is because of their stellar 20-15-4 road record.

"We've been a good road team all year long," Rangers coach John Tortorella said. "We wouldn't be in this situation if we handled ourselves a little bit better at home. We can't look back. … We need to look ahead and stay consistent no matter where we're at right now."

Sabres: Entering the final week, Buffalo has a chance at clinching the No. 2 spot in the East -- which would mean, in theory, avoiding the Washington Capitals until the conference finals.

But back-to-back losses, 4-2 in Toronto on Thursday and 3-1 in Montreal on Saturday, have put a crimp in those plans.

"It's not just the No. 2 seed, I think it's trying to get better going into the playoffs," left winger Paul Gaustad said. "That's our No. 1 goal, trying to improve every game going into the playoffs. Right now, I think we've taken two steps back and we've got to get back on track."

Who's hot: Someone on the Rangers has 3 goals in 3 games, and it's not Marian Gaborik. It's defenseman Marc Staal, who now has 8 on the year thanks to his recent scoring burst. … Sabres center Derek Roy has been on a tear, racking up 4 goals and 3 assists in his last 5 games.

Injury report: For the Rangers, forward Ryan Callahan and Sean Avery are still considered day-to-day. … Forwards Thomas Vanek and Tim Connolly did not practice Monday, and coach Lindy Ruff doesn't expect them back until later in the week. Defenseman Craig Rivet left practice early due to an illness and his status is unknown.

Stat pack: The Sabres' penalty-killing is 17-for-17 over their past five games. … The Rangers' penalty-killing is 21-for-22 over their past seven games. … The Sabres have missed the playoffs just 11 times in their 40-season history. The Rangers are in danger of missing the playoffs for the eighth time in the last 12 seasons.

Puck drop: "We should know what it takes to get it done. The games are going to be tighter now. Teams are playing harder, they're hungrier, they're more desperate. Just because we've clinched a playoff spot doesn't mean we can ease into the playoffs. You never want to back into the playoffs. You want to be playing the best you can." -- Buffalo's Mike Grier

It's the tale of two teams in HSBC Arena, as the Rangers slide in to take on the Sabres. The Sabres are two points away from clinching the North East division, whereas the Rangers are fighting for their playoff lives. A win is major to both teams, the Rangers needing a win to continue to claw their way into a playoff spot, while the Sabres need a win for a legitimate chance at taking the second seed, in addition to snapping the skid they've been on recently.

Patrick Kaleta, the man who has sent the fans on Broadway hope unhappy during the past two meetings between these squads, will not be dressed tomorrow, presenting perhaps the biggest loss for the Sabres.

Not much to say about this game. Just want to see a sound, solid effort on the part of the Sabres resulting in a win. Could not care less how the Rangers play, as long as they end up with a loss by the end of the night.

Lets go Buffalo, lets take out the Rags to the dumpster, as they are just disgusting.

As I said in the GDT, the call on Rivet was horseshit. The Bruins player was holding onto Rivet's stick like it was the last fucking raft on the Titanic.

Clinching at home (again) would be sweet.

Ok, so, SleshLund is switching tactics. We'll now use the low scoring method for this game with 1 impact player.

BUF 4 NYR 1

Meyers nets 2 with 2 assists
Pomminville nets 1 with an assist
Grier nets 1
Roy with 2 assists
Goose with 2 assists

Vanek practicing, but won't play. Miller is Messier finalist

Paul Hamilton Reporting
Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) -- Ryan Miller has been chosen as one of the five finalists for the Mark Messier leadership. He joins Jamie Langenbrunner of New Jersey, Nicklas Lidstrom of Detroit, Mike Richards of Philadelphia and Alex Ovechkin of the Caps. Previous winners were Mats Sundin, Jarome Iginla and Chris Chelios.

Miller said, "I'm happy to be a part of that group. They are definitely some great leaders. I especially look up to Jamie being able to play with him a few months ago at the Olympics and I'll just try to live up to the billing, just keep things consistent here. It does help to have a group of guys that I've played with for a couple of years and I'm familiar with everybody so I guess familiarity is easily confused with leadership because everybody around here knows each other really well and been around each other for years and years, so it's not hard to get along with those guys." Miller likes to lead by example on the ice. He said, "You try not to say too much because you're not in the trenches, in the corners like some of the boys are, but definitely when it applies to preparation and taking the attitude where we want to win every night and put ourselves in the best position possible, I can step up and speak there and for me it's about going out and executing because it's really hard to do those things without performing."

The Sabres can clinch the Northeast Division tonight if they beat the Rangers and Ottawa does not pick up a point in Florida. Lindy Ruff would like to clinch in front of the home fans because it would mean more, "I think it does, our fans have been great all year, we've played well in our building and it's our last regular season game and we want to win it here." Miller added, "It's a big accomplishment, a few years ago and last year we were on the outside looking in and hoping to be in a position like this and now we find ourselves there and we have to step up and take ownership of it. We wanted to be here so we take everything that comes along with it, wrap it up and try to get some enjoyment out of a small accomplishment on the way to something bigger."

Thomas Vanek's groin has improved to the point where he was back at practice for the first time, but it's not good enough to play tonight. Vanek said, "It felt pretty good, obviously I didn't go 100-percent, we're just easing into it but overall all I think I'm happy with the progress." He said he still had tightness, but no pain. You can hear all of Vanek's comments tonight during the broadcast of the game with Brian Koziol.

Craig Rivet said he feels a lot better than yesterday when he left practice with the flu, but he's still not 100-percent and won't play.

Lindy Ruff says Tim Connolly is still not close to skating with his teammates.

Join Schopp and the Bulldog at 6:00 for the pregame when they'll be joined by Ruff, Ryan Miller and Tyler Ennis.

I know I should want us to win. But I really wanna see Was vs NYR and see Lundqvist finish what he started last year. As nice as a win would be I really just want to see a solid effort.

If i stay home and watch NOVA while listening to the game i have a chance to grow the post count, if i go to watch the game at the hall, then i can watch two channels at once, three if i feel like pulling the third tv out.

you may think this an easy decision but for some reason no.
