Now I know how we all think power rankings are generally worthless since they're simply just some columnist filling space. I will point out that my rankings are a simple summation of each teams conference ranking in 5 major categories. Current standing, goals for per game, goals against per game, pp% and pk%. The lowest summation is the best ranked team by the stats. It doesn't mean anything, but it's interesting to look at.

Current Standings:
1). Washington
2). New Jersey
3). Buffalo
4). Pittsburgh
5). Ottawa
6). Montreal
7). Philadelphia
8). Boston
9). New York
(R)
10). Atlanta
11). New York (I)
12). Carolina
13). Florida
14). Tampa Bay
15). Toronto

Current Power Rankings per my Formula:
1). Buffalo (+2)
2). Washington (-1)
3). New Jersey (-1)
4). Philadelphia (+3)
5). Pittsburgh (-1)
6). Montreal (even)
7). New York (R) (+2)
8). Ottawa (-3)
9). Boston (-1)
10). Atlanta (even)
11). Carolina (+1)
12). Tampa Bay (+1)
13). New York (I) (-2)
14). Florida (-1)
15). Toronto (even)

So what does it really mean? Well, if you've got good stats (a high power ranking) but aren't as high in the conference, it means you're not clutch and you're not getting lucky (be it bounces or officiating).

I'll clarify.

Buffalo is:

3rd in the standings
3rd in goals/game
3rd in goals allowed/game
7th in pp%
1st in k%

For a total of 17, which is the lowest in the conference.

For comparison:

Washington is:
1st in standings
1st in goals/game
7th in goals allowed/game
1st in pp
13th in pk

for a total of 23.

I'm not saying it means anything, but by the numbers, the Sabres are a serious threat. I've said all year the biggest threats are Buffalo, NJ, and Pittsburgh.

These are the numbers that scare me:

Washington
1st in standings
1st in goals/game
7th in goals allowed/game
1st in pp

Alex, the Sabres PP is ranked 17th, not 7th.

In the conference. I didn't rank teams against each other across conferences. We'll cross that bridge if/when we come to it.

Numbers are fun! But too much fun can be dangerous. :(
