The Slovak Olympic Team would like to disagree with you. Sekera was probably their best defenseman during the tournament, and that was on a team with Chara and Meszaros.

This.

He played really, really well, and I think he's getting better as an NHL player as well.

Sekera takes a more offensive role anyways, he still is a young defensmen, and not all of them can jump into the NHL and be Myers or Doughty capable their first season.

It takes some time to develop defenders. Sekera should only get better, as with Butler. Both still young and learning their position.

Remeber it takes longer to defend then it does to score goals. Even when you are an offensive defensmen. Remeber it took Soupy a good 5 years before he became a good "defender".

I really don't care about what Sekera might be or can be under different circumstances. Right now, and next season, the Sabres d-corps won't be better if Sekera is a #5 or #6 d-man. We need enough better d-men that Sekera is a #7 man. He's still worth keeping on the roster and trying to develop, but he doesn't improve the team as a full-time starter right now.

Roster next season, what will happen and what would you do?

1. What will happen?
I won't know until it does happen.

2. What would I do?
Trade with Florida
Connolly, Butler/Sekera, 2nd rd 2010 pick
(flexibility should allow for multiple possibilities with prospects over picks)
for
Nathan Horton or Stephen Weiss (Horton as RW for Roy/Vanek or Weiss as C for Pomms/Ennis)

or

Trade with Edmonton
Stafford, draft pick/mid level prospect
for
Dustin Penner (Penner as RW for Roy/Vanek)

Make an offer for Backstrom
Make an offer to Matt Cullen if possible to center Kennedy and Gerbe/Mancari on line 3.

Horton won't come to buffalo and play with kaleta. Buffalo has no second round pick again this year. the one we got from bernier went to columbus for trash and the other ours went to san jose for the gross over payment that is the deteriorating defenseman Rivet.

where is this walking of stafford. he signed for two years. he would have to be traded same with connolly.
http://nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=BUF&season=0910

what do i see happening (and this a prediction as no one knows except the inept front office of the sabres). I see them trying to trade connolly. then coming back saying no one was trading. They will most likely not sign a decent defenseman. Darcy will say something like we have decent prospects in Weber and Gragnani. At this point and it's sad to say i have more faith in the Bills organization in making the necessary moves.

• Buffalo Sabres management is reportedly interested in re-signing UFA defensemen Henrik Tallinder and Toni Lydman.

The poor playoff performances of Tim Connolly and Derek Roy could also have the club in the market for more depth at center.

With more than $44 million being paid to 15 players already next season, landing another center likely means making a trade if there’s nothing affordable to be found in this summer’s free agent market.

Tallinder and Lydman have expressed interest in returning, but of course that’ll depend on their asking prices. Their respective cap hits last season were in the range of $2.5 - $2.8 million.

Who the hell will take Connolly's horrible playoff performance and his 4.5 mill cap?

So, um, yeah - Sekera played good in the Olympics. With different rules. And a DIFFERENT FUCKING TEAM.

Just sayin.

A team that is more worried about actually MAKING the playoffs than going deep?

There are rumors that the brass in St Louis could be under some pressure to make the playoffs in 2010-11. Perhaps they would roll the dice on Connolly adding some regular season offense to their roster.

He had a lot more points this year than anyone on the Blues......

What this guy said is the truth. I was laughing at Chara getting outplayed by Sekera. Not that I think that Sekera is better than Chara, he just took the Olympics more seriously that Chara and Ovechin combined.

Vanek - Hecht - Pominville
Ennis - Roy - Kaleta
Adam - Gaustad - Grier
Kennedy - McComrick- Kassain

When Gaustad get hut, put in Connolly.

Hecht can't play center to save his life. That's a bad bad bad idea.

Biiiiig reason why Jochen had such a down year two seasons ago was that he was forced to play center. The guy belongs on the wing.
