If I'm standing next to you, wearing an elbow pad, and I hit you in the head as HARD as I can, you can be killed if you were caught the right way.
When two individuals are on the ice, skating towards each other, and the same thing happens, the force is exponentially greater. Helmet or no helmet, the danger is the same.
"As long as it doesn't happen" is the attitude that's going to get someone killed.
