Simple enough question. Both important and at least fairly long term former Sabres. So, if you were to ignore what teams they're playing on (if that's at all possible), and just think about the two individuals, who would you rather see with his name on the Cup?

I'm voting Danny. He wasn't in Buffalo as long, but I think he was more of a difference-maker in his stay than Campbell. Brian, I must admit, was never much more than a second or third-pairing defenseman for the majority of his time in Buffalo in my eyes. He had his breakout seasons the 2 years Buffalo went to the ECF, and timed it perfectly to get his massive payout in free agency. Danny was clutch, exciting, and pretty classy for his whole stay IMO. I really, really wish they had put their efforts into signing him instead of Drury.

I don't car either way, as I have no fandom or animosity directed at either player. I do like the Blackhawks' system, though, so I'm rooting for them (and, subsequently, Campbell).

Without considering the teams they play for I'd say Briere.
But I hate the damn Flyers, their city and their fans.

I'd also enjoy seeing Kane bring the cup back to Buffalo for a day.

I'm rooting Chicago because I simply hate the Flyers. But for the two players as individuals, I'd rather see Danny win it. My emotions are just so darned complex. ;)

I wasn't a Sabres fan when that free agency epidemic hit, but I would have to say that Brierre's deal is slightly less retarded then Campbell's. I mean, Campbell is good but for fucks sake.

Agreed totally. If Philly wins the Cup and Briere scores the Cup clincher, than Darcy or Quinn should get fired.

Briere still has an amazing name, and I still love him as a player so I voted for him.
Random side note, I know a guy named kierre (pronounced Key-aire) who plays basketball for the school and whenever he plays, or I see him in school I yell YEEEEEAIRRRRRRRRRE! so when I think of Briere it's naturally going to BRIERRRRRRRRE!

BAM!

That.

I'll never forget that pathetic attempt by Sabres management to downplay their own bungling of the Drury/Briere situation by suggesting a year later that they DIDN'T screw up really since both Briere and Drury weren't setting the world on fire with their new teams anyway.

POINT 1: Whether or not they were playing well on their new team isn't relevant since it's about team chemistry. Hate to say it, but look at Torres. He seemed like a pretty productive player on the CBJs, but then you throww him into a differnet situation and he falls apart. Granted, Torres isn't Briere or Drury, so you didn't expect GREAT things, but he fell off a cliff as well when he got his new team.

POINT 2: As it turns out, Briere IS doing exceptionally well now with his new team. The fucker is talented....while it's actually Regeier and Quinn who SUCK.

By the way, I would prefer to see Briere win the Cup. I never liked Campbell that much. Maybe it's that disgusting sweat commercial.

I don't think that the Sabres management "sucks" but letting Brierre go was certainly a mistake, I totally agree with that. Having said that there are always two sides to every story, it's possible that Brierre did not WANT to return to Buffalo but was wise enough not to say that to the media.

He publically stated he wanted to stay. And management's "attempt" to keep him was to offer him the exact same contract his agent asked for at the beginning of his final season in Buffalo, and management passed on. Apparently, management thought a season at over a point per game and a trip to the conference finals wasn't going to change his asking price. Buffalo low-balled him and payed the price. Danny did nothing wrong.

You forgot one detail - they only offered him that deal after a season of not negotiating on June 30.

I have no hard feelings toward either player...and I actually like Briere more, but I can't root for the Flyers. Plus the 'Hawks have Pat Kane...so Blackhawks (Campbell) it is.

I wanted Briere back when everyone else wanted Drury back.

No, in certain regards, Sabres management DOES suck.

If you'll remember the chronology of events leading up to that amazing July 1st debacle 3 years ago, you'll recall the waffling and procrastinating that management did when it came to resigning Briere. Drury was a lost cause since he wanted to play for the Rangers, while Briere was ripe for resigning.....but as usual at that time, the braintrust wouldn't do any heavy negotiating during the season.

If I was Briere, I wouldn've left too after being treated like that.

The Campbell situation was we at least got something for him when we couldn't get a deal worked out.

Briere we shit the bed on.

But I'd say Briere as a player, longer career, but when we look at teams, Fuck Philly, go Blackhawks.

I don't want to see Hossa in three straight finals and not win one either.

If there's anybody who benefitted from the Briere screw up, it's Vanek and Pominville.

Had Sabres management not screwed the pooch by simultaneously losing Drury and Briere, there's NO WAY they would've matched Edmonton's Vanek offer OR overpaid to hang on to Pominville. They ended up doing those things to try and save some short-term face with the fans.

Unfortunately, those decisions have long-term implications.

Still, the deals thrown out that summer of '07 were all completely ludicrous. No way teams wish they were paying for those kind of deals right now.
