Panthers GM Dale Tallon called the league office and has asked for a video review of what appeared to be an intentional blindside shot to the head of defenseman Dmitry Kulikov by Sabres’ Patrick Kaleta in the third period, according to assistant GM Mike Santos.

I didn't like that hit and I'm generally a Kaleta fan.

Looked like headhunting to me...it was mostly a head-shot and it was definitely blind-side.

Blind side my ass. If you hit someone and its not a shot from behind then its the player's fault for not looking. Also, people fail to realize when you hit someone, its natural to extend your arms and since the arms are connected to your body at the top (shoulder) the only place they can go is up...ITS A NATURAL MOVEMENT. Not only was that hit not blind-sided or a hit to the head, it was a great friggin' open ice hit. Basketball is a contact sport, football is a contact sport...hockey is a collision sport!

That's a bullshit statement. If someone's not looking at you that doesn't give you the right to head shot them.

You can call it what you want but it was absolutely NOT a head shot. There is a difference between a head shot and someone's head getting hit in the process of a hit. Kaleta did not intentionally go for his head...he was going after a solid body check and as he turned his upper body, he put his head at the same spot Kaleta's shoulder was going.

It would be cool if we had a video posted of this so I can make a judgment...

He didn't excuse headshots, he just said that if a player gets caught cleanly and not from behind and didn't see the hit, then it's their own fault.

I agree it was a headshot. Whether or not he meant it to be one is a different matter.

I think it falls under the new headshot rules, and that patty should get some sort of punishment.

Ok, so you don't think he should have gotten anything for it?

Argue the game misconduct all you want, but that shot fully warranted the 4 minutes he got.
I didn't see the Sabres bench up in arms about the penalty, I guess you had a better view than they did

Tallon has to stop being such a baby, all he has done this year is bitch at the league.

It was an open ice hit and deserved no penalty. This hit was no different than Brian Campbell's hit on RJ Umburgher a few years back. Umbergher wasn't looking just like Kulikov wasn't looking. Do you honestly think that Umbergher's head didn't get hit during that collision? It did and that's why his ass got knocked out.

That being said, there are different rules now than a few years back (or even 20 years back when hockey wasn't over taken by pansy ass European players) however Kaleta had no control over the fact that Kulikov's head got hit. If the same hit was put on Kulikov by someone other than Kaleta, I seriously doubt there would have been a penalty. Refs are always looking for a penalty to call on guys like Kaleta. Kaleta is not a perfect player and does throw some hits that disgust me (like when he leaves his feet) but this hit was a good open ice hit.

egh...I'm with you on the fact that the refs are looking at Kaleta in a special way, but if they just wanted to give him weak-ass penalty because of his reputation I highly doubt it's going to be a double minor.

Onoudint.

The Europeans don't make the rules, and they certainly haven't made concussions any less serious(aka the ice harder). I would imagine if Europeans wanted to come over here and get plastered by N. American players all night it would gain good ratings, and would not be frowned upon by the league at all.

Pretty sure umberger got concussed because he hit his head on the ice.

Hrmmmm, can't blame this one on Canada, so I blame THE EUROPEANS. If they hadn't let those Makarov, Larionov and Kurri guys over here, then concussions would have been a thing of the past.

Umberger looked like a bird that had just flown into a window.
