Toni Lydman and Brian Campbell are 2nd and 3rd in +/- this season.

Lydman isn't much of a surprise, the Ducks are playing great and Selanne is ripping it up.

Campbell has to be lucky breaks at the right time, or just not playing top pairing minutes, which I'm sure he isn't.

On a side note, how many of you think Letang has a shot at winning the Norris this season? I have watched him play quite a bit and he is certainly one of the leagues best. I still remember his first training camp when he faked a shot then stepped around a forward like it was nothing. He's the #1 guy for every shoot out, great hands, a vastly improved shot (though the one timer is still a work in progress), great skater, strong on the puck, physical, and he's one of those rare players that can only be described as a rover with a conscience. All over the ice but rarely if ever found trapped. He's got a good stick too, much better at one on one this season.

An ex-girlfriend who managed a hotel that the Sens were staying at during the playoffs a few years ago, said that Mezarros is a stand out character and a class act.

Playing a lot and being on a good team can lead to overinflated +/-

I would look up plus/minus numbers for their respective clubs but I don't have the time to right now. Maybe later.

I do, I'm without a job for another 80 days or so.

It's a flawed concept but I still like to figure out the difference of a players +/- with that of the teams Net +/-. The net +/- is the filtered number after special teams have been eliminated.

Anaheim's Team Net +/- is -12 (23rd worst in the NHL). So with Totally Lydman being a +24, he's +36 above his teams standard of even strength play. That's extremely good!

Chicago is a +9, Campbell is a +23 so that makes him a +14. Very good.

Mezzer is a +28 but the Cryers are a leagues best +46, making him a -18. So now you see how this way of looking at +/- is very flawed, but it does help to put things into perspective with relation to a teams success.

The Sabres are ranked 22nd at a -10.
Making Montador a +20
Weber +18
Baby Gerbe +16
Gaustad +15

Vanek a -3
Connolly -2
Myers -1
Ennis +2

Can we apply this logic to Letang? He has a good +/-, but his teams GD is high. Also, he takes mad shots(not as many as Buff), and that leads to points(it's only logical the more you shoot the more points you'll get). I look at guys like Enstrom and Visnovsky who have just as many points, and still decent +/-, while playing on teams with a poor GD. They also take far fewer shots. While I know Letang is a highly skilled player, I'd also take these things into account when deciding who the league's best defensemen is. My guess is they'll give it to Big Buff anyways.

EVERY TIME I think I know all there is to know about the NHL and when everything becomes predictable to me a Buff comes along and reminds me of how stupid I really am. I thought he would be AWFUL playing defense...

You aren't alone, there were PLENTY of people saying "bad trade", blah, blah, blah. At least you can admit when you're wrong. I just figured there's no way a guy almost wins a Conn-Smythe by luck. That just doesn't happen, period.

I'm confused by this observation of yours because I based my opinion on Buff primarily on what I seen of him in the playoffs last year, and I thought he was an awful skater and an accessory player at best. When I heard they wanted to move him to D I laughed and mocked the Thrashers, I learned that he played there before but I still thought it was stupid. But he's a much better skater then I judged him for last year, and there is more skill to his game then I ever thought he had.

BTW Toews won that award last year and IMO there were 3-5 other players on the BH team alone that I would have chose over him. I didn't see the hype, to me he played like a big guy who gave the truly skilled guys more room to create, that's about it. I'm still surprised at how versatile he is.
