Thanks for DOMA Bill!

Add Bill and Chelsea Clinton to the ever-expanding list of politicians pushing for gay marriage.

In a statement released by the Human Rights Campaign, Bill Clinton said:

Our nation’s permanent mission is to form a ‘more perfect union’ – deepening the meaning of freedom, broadening the reach of opportunity, strengthening the bonds of community. That mission has inspired and empowered us to extend rights to people previously denied them. Every time we have done that, it has strengthened our nation. Now we should do it again, in New York, with marriage equality. For more than a century, our Statue of Liberty has welcomed all kinds of people from all over the world yearning to be free. In the 21st century, I believe New York’s welcome must include marriage equality.

At a launch party for a non-profit group, Chelsea Clinton said she hopes gay people in New York will be able to marry their best friend, just like she did when she and husband Mark Mezvinsky wed last summer.

"I certainly expect my straight friends to help us achieve that for all New Yorkers, for all Americans, and for the children that, at least, Marc and I hope to have someday," Clinton said.

The Clintons' support comes shortly after Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced he'll travel the state promoting a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage.

Polls show a record number of New Yorkers support marriage equality, and Gov. Cuomo has taken an increasingly active roll in ensuring legislation gets passed.

Why should it be illegal? Do people who don't agree run the lives of others?

That's just against all "gay marriages should be illegal" argument.

I just found it ironic since he was the president who signed the Defense of Marriage Act, whether he agreed with it at the time or not.

Yes.

Religion is about the acceptance and love of anyone. Unless they don't agree with you or want to do something different, then they're heathen heretics.

I'm pretty sure Jesus hated fags. Just saying. He clearly didn't mean you should show love, acceptance and forgiveness to everyone. (sarcasm)

I've always been shocked by religious people who speak out against things they don't agree with. The entire message of the Christian faith is love and good will. Expressing that you don't agree with something is fine but freaking out and controlling the lives of everyone you can based on your own chosen principles is not what the big guy wanted. It's like they got the rules down but not the whole "Christian" attitude. Thankfully many do though.

honestly, the gov't should just get out of the marriage buisness

IF people want to file jointly for taxes/heathcare then let them file the paperwork and be done with it and call it a union, be it man man, man woman, woman woman, brothers, sisters, cousins, grandparents whatever

just dont have the govt say they are marrying people, of any kind

As far as I'm concerned, if straight people can join in marriage and be happy, everyone should be entitled to do the same.

Jolly good show, Bill!

The problem with gay marriage in this country isn't fucking religion it's fucking government regulating marriage licenses

Government has to regulate unions in some form.

I'd be all for the term marriage being the exclusive realm of religion, and unions being the exclusive term in government.

However, you know as well as I do that even if you did that, the religious zealots would STILL oppose it.

So what if they do?
The Amish don't like electricity and Pentecostals dont't like exposed skin and Mormons don't like coffee...those facts dont' affect public life or discourse.

It's not hard to find a church to get married if your gay...the rest is a legal contract.

What annoys me is the imposition of one belief system on others who may not share it.

If two homosexuals want to enter into a legal civil union, they should be allowed to without someone from a church sticking their nose into it. Right now, that's not happening.

People want to pass laws to allow homosexuals to marry legally. Not in the eyes of any church. They're still getting opposed every step of the way.

The biggest issue I have with gay marriage is the potential to abuse it for tax purposes. How would any two college roomates or friends be prevented from deciding to "get married" just so they can file jointly? They could continue to file jointly even if they move away from each other, until they ultimately decide to "divorce" and marry someone for real of the opposite sex. What recourse is there to prevent this without revamping the tax system (not that it doesn't need revamping for 50 other reasons)?

I don't think that's a problem relegated to gay marriage. There's nothing to prevent heterosexual sham marriages.

Opponents of Governor Andrew Cuomo's effort to legalize gay marriage in New York on Saturday held their first Mayday for Marriage! rally.

The statewide bus tour made its first public stop in downtown Elmira, located in the south-central part of the state.

The conservative group New Yorker's Family Research Foundation is behind the campaign to douse Cuomo's plan to make New York the sixth state in the nation to legalize the institution.

“In same-sex marriage relationships we're intentionally denying children a mom or a dad,” Rev. Jason McGuire told attendees, NBC affiliate WETM reported. “That's just not right and just not good public policy. We want to encourage marriage between a man and a woman.”

McGuire likened passage of marriage equality to the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade.

“My generation asks the last, 'Where were you when they tried to redefine when life began?' The next generation will ask of ours, 'Where were you when they tried to redefine marriage? ' What will we say to future generations?”

Four additional clergy also spoke at the tour's inaugural stop: Rev. Duane Motley of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, Rev. Bern Lytle of the Big Flats Wesleyan Church in Big Flats, Rev. David Hackett of the Christian Hope Center in Corning and Rev. John McConnell of the Southside Alliance Church in Elmira.

Elmira City Mayor John Tonello said he disagreed with the group's message: “I'm hopeful it passes the state Legislature this year and gay marriage is approved.”

A majority (58%) of New York voters support altering the state's marriage laws to include gay and lesbian couples. But passage in the state Senate, where a similar measure died in 2009, remains uncertain. Senator Ruben Diaz Sr., the most outspoken opponent of the legislation in the Senate, will headline a May 15 rally in the Bronz.

Lawmakers in Rhode Island recently announced they'll move ahead with a civil unions bill, angering gay marriage supporters who have vowed to fight on.

Heterosexual couples get married all the time for purely financial reasons, a big one being health insurance.
