Lol, I am such an Ego-maniac it's awesome. I've really found my stride as of late...it's a good feeling, given the dark place I've been in since November. Found my smile again.

Patagonia. 100%.

I'm partial to Marmot...Patagonia is nice but always overpriced IMO. North Face can be priced well, but you'll pay a premium for their serious gear.

Marmot is nice, but I haven't seen it in many stores around here; at least not in quantity. I said Patagonia because if you're comparing them and The North Face, for $20 more I feel like you're getting at least $20 in better quality.

Marmot is a good quality brand. I have a couple and they have lasted me for years through some serious backtrail hiking and keep me feeling warm and dry in shit weather.

Speaking from complete ignorance...as usual, do you guys have REI back east or do you go mainly to EMS and local stores for this sort of thing?

I was a big fan of EMS a decade or so ago, but since moving west, REI has won me over.
Their member only used gear sales are usually spectacular as is their return policy.

REI is the shit. We have one about 30-40 minutes from my house. Totally worth the drive. Also, basically next door is a place to door indoor mountain climbing. Completely insane.

Looking for a durable and quality watch next. Nothing classy because this thing is going to take a beating.

When I lived in NOVA, I went to Luray (I think that's spelled right) in the Blue Ridge mountains. Really nice area, lots of camp sites or cabins available on a river. Some of the cabins, IIRC, have hot tubs, and they've got tubing down the river (with vans to pick you up a few miles downstream every 30-45 minutes).

I've always been a fan of Timex Ironman watches; they're inexpensive and last pretty well.

I am going to take a long weekend coming up in late winter/early spring. Luray looks amazing. Thanks for the insight :D

Automatic (self winding) or Quartz (battery) movement?

I just got a Seiko 5 automatic for Christmas. It's an inexpensive but very reputable automatic movement. You can set the date function for both French and English.

They can be purchased from Amazon for under $100

As far as quartz movements go, I've always liked Skagen for their slim, clean design. But, I don't believe those fit your need.

I also have a Timex that's been great so far. It's an inexpensive, reliable watch.

I've always heard very good things about the Casio G Shock watches too.

I like the looks of that Seiko...That's my style.
I'm partial to the LL Bean Field watch
http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/75438?feat=2932-GN2
or the vintage field watch
http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/53786?fe ... odxs&dds=y

Both around $100...quartz with Swiss movement.
I had one when I was in high school and spent many years trying other brands but sticking to that general minimalistic/military style and I eventually just went back and got another from LL Bean. Love the thing.
