Because "to be a man" as you put it no longer has any currency.
Used to be that if you owned-up, folks would recognize this and respect your courage - Nowadays, the concepts of honor and respect and integrity are all laughed at, or ignored.
They are part of an atavistic code reserved for paternalistic fraternities, such as the military.
One is actually rewarded for one's indiscretions and flaws by a society that despises the honor-code. The honor-code is demanding and can be a source of humiliation if one lacks honesty, character or integrity.
It is frequently mocked as being non-progressive and a sign of an absolutist and rigid mentality. It is often associated with fascism and aggressiveness and a warring Cro-Magnon mentality. It is criticized as being chauvinistic and misogynistic, for the bonds it builds among those who uphold it. It is exclusive, by its' very nature - It cannot include anyone who lacks self-respect.
Folks have learned that it's better not to judge - Lest one be judged. It is better to forgive - In order to receive forgiveness for some future transgression.
It's called "flexibility". It's called: "Buying Coward's Insurance".
No one loses - And everyone gets a prize. Even when they are extreme douchebags.
