My uncle adopted a greyhound. Great dog. Quiet as a mouse and gentle as a lamb. And damn could that bitch run! Also, just down the road from my in-laws' camp site was this beautiful house that was owned by a couple who rescued the dogs. They sold it last year. I think it went for a couple of mil.

He was about to take the dog to the pound but my wife happens to love the breed. I've got plenty of experience with larger dogs but I've never owned a working dog / sled dog.

Does anyone have experience owning a malamute? Any advice on whether I should take this thing in?

Important info:
I have a small (fenced) yard but there are lots of parks around
I have a indoor cat
I have a 4 year old kid
I'm partial to cage training (AFAIK this animal hasn't been trained outside of house breaking)

I owned a Malamute several years back and they are great dogs but mine had problems with other animals in the house. You need to be sure it will get along with the cat. To be honest mine had attacked our lab several times. Not saying you shouldn't do it but be careful.

Currently I have a 3 year old Bulldog named Winston. He is the best dog I have ever owned. I love him.

My wife isn't afraid of big dogs (she's actually the one pushing for this dog because she loves this breed), but I know she's never lived with a big dog and has definitely never lived with a properly trained dog ;)

My bad; I should have said working group dogs.

Dog Breeds of the Working Group were originally bred to assist their human-counterparts in performing labor-intensive tasks. They generally own a large, physically robust stature, with strong points including a high level of intelligence that has historically allowed them to specialize in guarding, sled-pulling, or helping to transport materials or other goods. This typically includes search-and-rescue dogs. This Group contains 25 Dog Breeds in total.

I have a big dog in my German Shepherd, in which she is a huge baby.

She is a great dog who is very hyper at times but then is very lazy at other times. When you get her riled up she is hyperactive.

Our only big issue with her is her protectiveness, but that is common with a German Shepherd also, she'll bark at anyone approaching our door and her hair stands up on her back when people are at the door and her deep bark also. She has never bit anyone either and is very loving once she sniffs you.

Basically if you treat the dog right, she'll love you as much as you love her.

Thanks for all the advice folks.
We're going to bring her over to our house this morning and at least foster her for a few days to see how it works out.
I also found a malamute rescue group close to here so if she's not a right fit for our family she'll have a better place to go than the SPCA.

I'll post some pictures later.

oh man......

Ahem.
I will provide my wife with instruction in regards to dog training so we're all on the same page.
Besides that, I'm profoundly aware of who's actually in charge around here ;)

German Shepherds also have a double coat of fur, but if the dog was raised in a warmer climate you don't have too much of a concern, just make sure they have plenty of water, and my dog drinks plenty of water when it is 100 outside. But she is more of an inside dog and just lays on the air vents in the summer, and I'm sure a Malamute will do the same in Socal's summer weather.

This would be one of my main concerns. A friend of mine inherited a Burmese Mountain Dog, and even the summers here in Syracuse are brutal on him. The winters however...

Beautiful Bernese. They are so lovely.

I have wanted one of those dogs since I was seven, and reading about their temperaments and finding out that they're great dogs in that area in addition to being absolutely gorgeous and not tiny... Such gentle dogs, as long as they're handled properly, and gentle's how I roll haha. Someday...

Shame they have such short lives, though. :(

I think I'll have a Bernese and a Greyhound (or a mutt from the SPCA haha; either way, it will be a good thing).

Here she is...
We haven't made a decision on keeping her yet.
She's very smart. I had her heeling in 1/2 a block and she slept the whole night in her crate on the first day of crate training.
These dogs seriously need to be dominated though. Thick headed for sure.

Yeah...she is a very good looking dog. I can tell from the way she sits that's she's going to have hip dysplasia problems when she gets older though. It's quite pronounced.

That sucks, I have friends who have had labs and German Shepard's that developed it, and it is a sad thing to go through. Fortunately, my breed of choice doesn't seem to suffer from it very often - if only they didn't get cancer :( :(

Cats are fine, Kids are fine. They are great loving dogs, but they chew up the house when they are alone. We have to tie my dog up inside the house when we leave, so he can't get to anything around the house. When we first got him, he chewed a hole through are Garage door and escaped. He also ripped down all of our blinds at all the windows. He is the most friendly dog I have ever seen, but is bored when alone. Also, if you leave them outside for a long time without accompanying them, then they dig holes and lay in them.

this is a great website that I found that helps you take care of the dog by understanding their instincts. It's a great site. It like perfectly explains my dog.
