They are great loving dogs, but they chew up the house when they are alone. We have to tie my dog up inside the house when we leave, so he can't get to anything around the house. When we first got him, he chewed a hole through are Garage door and escaped. He also ripped down all of our blinds at all the windows. He is the most friendly dog I have ever seen, but is bored when alone. Also, if you leave them outside for a long time without accompanying them, then they dig holes and lay in them.

I feel your pain. My lovely long-coat female Akita absolutely SHREDDED my $800 soft jeep top last week. In the 12 degree cold. Of course.

I had to scramble to find a used jeep top that wasn't in nearly as good of shape as the original. I am now $275 lighter because of this. After I got over the initial shock and guilt of leaving her outside for too long (in order for her to do this, she was out for awhile), I was so pissed, but unless I catch her in the act, discipline does no good.

She adores the snow and cold (complete opposite of her mom!), so I have to give her play time outdoors. Just can't leave her out too long in the cold.

Same premise: Akitas, when left alone or bored, can be incredibly destructive.

At Shibuya station in Tokyo there is a statue of an Akida named Hachikō. Hachikō's owner was a professor at the University of Tokyo and every day Hachikō would wait for his master to return home from the university. One day his owner didn't return because he had a stroke at school and died. Yet, for ten years after Hachikō showed up at the train station every evening to wait for his master.

LMAO I thought the same thing.

It wasn't "LMAO" for us though...it was 600$ out the window... :o
From a non-biased point of view though...it's the most beautiful dog I have ever seen. He's a mutt. He is Alaskan Malamute, some kind of Husky, and mixed Wolf.
He has long blond hair, and is sometimes compared to a golden lab, except he has pointy ears, not floppy.

Australian Shepherd.

Bernese Mountain Dog.

Both beautiful, intelligent, and energetic breeds.

So Cross, how is the she doing, the dog?

Did she stay at your house again? And the big thing is, does your daughter love her?

The dog is great...The previous owner must have been an idiot human to not be able to handle her.

It's been 2 days and I have her:
heeling
sitting
lying down
staying (for short periods)
not attacking my cat (although that hasn't stopped the cat from being scared shitless)

She broke out of her cage last night by bending steel bars, but it was because she had diarrhea, so I'm not getting too upset over that.

My daughter is seriously intimidated by the dog because they basically see eye to eye. She's always eager to play with the dog, but honestly, we're training my daughter almost as much as the dog on how to behave around her.

We're still looking for a better home for her though, we're just not in a hurry.

I had a standard poodle for 17 years, he was a great dog. He was so intelligent and well mannered. Good ol' Japser. We adored him.

I hope you keep her Cross, beautiful dog, and I mentioned your daughter because I'm sure she is going to love to play with her.

The dog I've wanted to get for about 20 years now is the Belgian Tervuren. They are beautiful, intelligent dogs, but I can't bring myself to pay $600-$800 for a dog, so I will probably end up down at the humane society, where I got my last dog (who was the best dog I've ever owned).

Image

There is also a version with a black coat, called a Belgian Shepherd, that I wouldn't mind having.

One word comes to mind when I see a Belgian Tervuren...

Majestic.

They are truly a unique, and rare, breed of dogs.

The breed I've always wanted to own is a Weimaraner.
I think they're absolutely gorgeous and I prefer short hair.

Image

Zilla...you'd be surprised at the number of pure-bred and rare breeds that pass through a shelter. An ex of mine is a director at the LASPCA and she said I could easily get a weimaraner from there.

Go and volunteer or make friends with someone that works there and just have them call you if they ever see one arrive.

We got soooooo lucky when we found our dog, well not with how she acts sometimes.

She was 4 months old and a pure bred German Shepherd in the SPCA? Got her for $125 plus her being fixed.

For a dog that can go for upwards of $1000 bucks, that's a steal.

Weimars are pretty cool dogs, some of my hunting friends have them, and a girl who worked for me has one as a house pet - Zander - he used to come to work occasionally and visit my dogs - he is a very likable dog :D

Working group dogs can break out of their crates if they really want to. My boy was breaking out, while I had the crate in the spare bedroom. As he isn't familiar with the room, he stressed, and was breaking out; destroying two expensive carpets in the process.

The crate is now in the family room; which he is familiar with. Prefer to keep him in the bedroom during the day, but the living room works better for him. A lot cheaper this way, too.....

'Zilla!!! I love you--that is my favorite story of all-time! I cannot find the original Japanese version with the English subtitles. My avatar was a black and white pic of him I found on Wikipedia for a time on the old boards and on my FB page.

I have pre-ordered the Richard Gere version set to be released (straight to dvd-WTF is up with that?) in March. It originally was released in Japan in June (?)or July (?) of last year, then was premiered in America at a west coast film festival (not Sundance) which didn't seem to garner much interest. It is a beautiful story. I cried when I read the book.

We had a beautiful male who passed away last spring (Acute Canine Hemolytic Anemia) that epitomized all of the wonderful qualities of the breed. I was (and still shed tears over him) absolutely crushed. I posted about it on the old boards. He was only 7.6 years old. We now have his descendants-niece and nephew. The boy is very reminiscent of his uncle. We take a lot of comfort in the traits he exhibits while still enjoying his unique-ness. I would never own another type of dog.

Thank you for the nice reminder....it made me smile. :)
