It also says that all other affiliations are welcome given that they take the topic seriously. I took it quite seriously -- trust me

Here, however, that respect was not granted, and thats encouraged by the moderating team

Wouldn't it be better to find out in there, to read the interpretations of the "message of god" from true believers?

I already know I'm too skeptical to discuss it rationally. I'd just be spouting about inconsistencies with no intent to "learn". That's why I don't bother discussing it.

Wrong. My actual intent was to attempt to not let the standard be set that christians get some special protected status that other people/beliefs/institutions do NOT. Foolish of me, probably, but it at least seems like a pretty glaring double standard to me.

Sigh. Yeah...my own internal voice has just chimed in with the same opinion. Fuckit, time to crack a beer and take the puppy out.

We wouldn't know because we can't have a thread for agnostics...

The use of the word trainwreck secured that much earlier today.

I guess you're right, but it seemed to be against the intent of the thread , imo(but then again what do I know). I just don't like the idea of intolerance of others beliefs(and I'm glad that wasn't your intent). I'm done with this for now; having too much fun fighting with my g/f anyways.

Look everyone, is it 4:20 where you all are, because some of you need to relax.

Yankee, I totally understand your points about a double standard, and about Pants posting verses in the other thread. Also, I myself am EXTREMELY suspicious of organized religion, for more reasons than I can count. BUT, as I try to tell my students often, sometimes it's not what you say, but how you say it. There's a lot of venom going around, and lately a lot of it is coming from your direction. Is it worth it? Like daz, I myself stayed out of that thread (or at least the real debate) out of respect. I think a lot of what irony was saying in that thread was worth taking to heart.

Personally, I would rather talk about pie, but I'll chime in with my two-cents.

Rutledge wrote, in the original post:

Rutledge222 wrote:
As I told Schony earlier, Ive been debating about whether or not I should create this.

It is my intention while starting this thread for it to be serious discussions, about Bible Verses and Interpretations of those verses. And other things. This is for the Christians to come together and talk about it, any non-Christians are welcome to comment and post as long as they are serious and wont hijack the thread. I already have Schony's discretion on this topic.

So basically I see this thread as a Online Bible Devotion or Bible study kinda thing.

Now, as an atheist I know the game of pulling out the most outrageous Bible verses and throwing them in the faces of Christians, with a "there, explain that!" Personally my favorite is 2 Kings 2, where god sends two she-bears to rip a group of children limb-from-limb for making fun of a bald guy (as a bald guy myself, this seems to be a fair punishment to me).

That‘s all good fun, and generally I expect people to hold their own in the battle of wits. But, the difference here is that Rutledge made a sincere attempt to create a thread for “Bible devotion“ or “Bible study,” not to push his/her religion on others, or to defend it, or to attack people of other religions (or no religion). Rutledge specifically contacted Schony before starting the thread to see if it was okay, indicating a desire not to cause conflict.

To me, that warrants a little tolerance. So what if there is an exception being made for this specific thread? How does that hurt any of us? Besides, Rutledge is one of us, so let’s cut him/her a little slack.

Finally, if Cross is ok with Bible study as a thread, then that‘s then end of it. It‘s his sandbox.

Well I thought it was a great thread to discuss religion so long as we could ignore the age old debate of whether any particular religion has merit or not (which leads to contention), and some of us were not mature enough to do so.

From this post on I don't want to see a trainwreck antagonistic debate.

Pants, your debate can go to another thread if wanted, but enoughs enough in this one. Consider this your warning.

It appears here, that the new mod Sabresalltheway, has made a declaration that the christian thread will NOT be hijacked. This seems like a new, and rather unsettling precedent to set. Do we have 'authority' figures here telling us that other threads are untouchable? No. Apparently no other view is as important as what the christians on this board believe, and whatever us hell-bound athiests believe will not be tolerated?

I firmly believe in Evolution. I believe in it so fervently that an outside viewer might regard it as a religious view. It at least appears to me, to be as important to me, as the christian god/bible is to christians. HOWEVER, if I start a thread saying "hey, evolutionists, lets talk about evolution!" there is NO FUCKING WAY anyone is going to step in and keep it from being hijacked or derailed. If it gets too heated some mod will come along and lock it, but no one is going to step in and force people to respect my opinions.

I feel like Sabresalltheway really stepped out of bounds with this "warning" to pants, who, ironically, did exactly what the thread indicated he was supposed to do, he quoted bible verses he found interesting for the sake of discussion.

I'm with you and Pants 100% on this one. I've already made my stance in a thread a few months ago that started a shit ton of controversy and basically just left all sides with a major headache. That is why I didn't even bother going into the other thread to back you guys up. I am an atheist and even in my college courses I can't escape Christianity and the notion of "god." It frustrates me to no end every single day. I deal with it too much in real life to want to deal with it in my escape(this forum). Thats basically all I'm gonna say because between college and working I have enough stress in my life.

When Homer goes to heaven on a Simpsons Halloween show, he gets to ask any questions he wants, so he asks: "What is the one true religion?"

answer:
"It's a mixture of Voodoo and Methodist".

So there you have it.

Personally, I thought I answered the Captain's question/pointing out of the verse on slavery quite nicely and correctly...by posting the rest of the verse. SO many times, the bible is taken out of context and seen as absurd...and many times the bible does contradict itself...my priest was just talking about this this past Sunday.

I wholeheartedly respected the Captain's opinion and right to ask questions and told him so in a PM.

I also hope there IS an atheist thread and a Jewish thread and a Wiccan thread, etc. I'd love to learn more about all of it and would find it interesting. But, alas, this is SABRESjunkie, not debatejunkie, so is it the right place for any of it? I suppose once we all shook out our sheets, the conversations would all die down and we'd all go back to watching the Sabres and complaining about soft goals and lack of back checking. But, seriously, all's fair...if there's a Christian thread, there should be others, assuming we can all talk like friends and net get all hostile, right?
