The NBA instituted their draft lottery because it was becoming apparent that teams were throwing games to try and get the #1 pick. Back then, the two worst teams flipped a coin to see who went first. The weighted lottery went into effect to counteract that possibility.

It's a little more plausible to try in the NBA where a single top draft pick can turn your franchise around. The effect a single player has on a team isn't as great in the NFL or NHL, so it's not typically a sound strategy.

I think it makes even less sense in the NHL quite frankly.

1. First off I didn't know you were talking about the old sabres forum! I thought you meant this one and yes that was my mistake!
2. Yes I said that because of Darcy's track record. He's only going to get us talent thru the draft and improving our draft position will get you or should at least get you some pretty darn good players! I have no faith in Darcy making a trade that will get us some decent talent to help us. The last few years he has lost key players for nothing and trade picks away for rentals with no intent of signing them. THat's a waste. Like I said you have your opinion I have mine!

Good teams build through the draft. If you want to criticize some of Darcy's picks, most of the board would be right behind you. However, you certainly don't build a team via trade. Historically trades are decent for plugging holes for a playoff run. Your recollection of Darcy's trades is also suspect. He generally hasn't thrown away pick on rentals.

I'm actually encouraged that Darcy doesn't overpay for marginal short term improvements that fucknuts like yourself want him to.

As far as #1, you're a lying sack of doo doo butter.

Pants : "Hmmm... Gunna call BS on this one.
I'm fairly certain you posted pictures of yourself on the old forums and cried about your relationship problems. I've got a decent memory."

You : "Not me buddy! Never was on the old forums" (Note that you CLEARLY acknowledge the 'old forums' here. Not sure how you could suddenly misconstrue that to mean THESE forums, of which there were not other incarnations. )

Since you seem to know everything about hockey and that I should be bowing down at your feet because of your knowledge of the game. Tell me then what is your full take on this years Sabres team and what do you think Darcy should do? Is ownership just content on making the playoffs or do they actually want to take a shot a the cup? We both know that this current roster isn't going to win the cup so don't kid yourself.
Myself I only see a few things different from last years team than this years team and it's a motivated Miller determined to being the U.S. #1 goalie and elevating his game to another level that none of us have seen before. Plus the addition of Myers has been huge for this team he's been great on defense and is logging a ton of minutes and is playing key roles in all situations. Mike Grier has been a nice surprise addition back for his leadership, forechecking, penalty killing and his toughness role. Last year this team had a ton of 1 goal losses and this years it's just the opposite. Yes this team will make the playoffs but that's it. This team will not be Washington or Pittsburgh in a seven game series.

Blah blah blah.

1. You lied when you said you were not a member of the old forums.
2. You've repeatedly advocated for the Sabres to throw games to attempt to improve their draft position.

Why should anyone really care to listen to anything you have to say?

I'm shocked when people say teams should tank for higher draft picks.

Has an organization actually done that before, in any sport? Has it ever been documented?

Drafting Mario Lemieux, traded away everyone to drop below New Jersey.

Very good point. And look what it did for the Penguins! They also drafted Jagr a few years later and ended up making some big trades to acquire Coffey, Barrasso, Joe Mullen, Larry Murphy, and Ron Francis.

now if that was a call out too me i'd ay ask me about the bills not the sabres as i think i could do a better job with the football. which is weird seeing how poor the bills seem, or at least o could present my idea of how i'd run this off season. I'll suck it up and deal with Gailey as the coach for this year, the the OC is changing. still debating whether or not to post the whole idea under one of the threads. well i'll go drink something and decide. my only idea for the sabres is trading for sharp and fisher. but it's up in the air.

No I do want to talk hockey if you don't like someone's opinion then fine! He has his philosophy and I have mine about the Sabres. I feel that Regier hasn't done much the last few seasons to make this team better. You have to take chances every once in a while to and not be so conservative. He's always telling us fans about fair market or the market just isn't there. He has way too many excuses. Here's my point to the draft. The last decent scorer we drafted was Vanek and he was a top 5 pick other than that their hasn't been anything. Last year was a great chance to get in the top ten or better and the Sabres decide to finish the season on a high note instead of trying to unload some garbage and build for the future. So trade a 2nd rounder for Moore who was a rental player with no intention of re-signing the guy. Why trade for him then. This team wasn't good enough to make the playoffs and even if they did sneak in they would have been bounced in the first round. Start building for the future. The Cup should be the first priority on Ownership and GM Regier's plate and not just being content on making the playoffs. That's the point I'm trying to make. Buffalo keeps on finishing in the middle of the road with next to no tinkering in the roster and this is what we are getting every year. Middle of the road team. Regier has made some decent trades in his time with Buffalo but he needs to wake up and see this team this year is decent and could use some help. Ottawa is 1 point behind us now and are smoking hot. The Sabres can't beat this team to save their lives and Regier wants to sit and do nothing. How about going out and acquiring a player or two that can help because this current team isn't going to make it to the Cup without any additions. Why not take a shot without mortaging too much of the future. I'm now saying trying to do what the devils did but maybe a minor pickup or two could really help.
