Whooo!!! Only taken a 16 hour day, but now it's installed. Let's see if the firewall blocks it (again).

I've had an Oracle DBA (yes, employed BY Oracle) at my personal disposal all day (in person, like, in the cube with me). At least we get good support ^.^

We inherited a set of Oracle DBs from the company we bought a few years back. I'm pretty sure they're Oracle 8i. :p

Of course, our incompetent systems manager laid off the DBAs that built the thing originally in the FIRST round of layoffs that he did, which left nobody that actually knows dick about them. Of course, nobody actually realized that until the aforementioned systems manager left, and my boss eventually assumed that position. Now our programmers are working 16 hour days trying to reverse engineer the thing, and figure out how to migrate everything over into our MySQL based system.

Thank God I'm a network guy. :)

lol - in the position I'm in, I'm an "everything" guy, required to dive into anything as deep as I need to to understand it. It's kind of cool, because sometimes I use what I already know and fly through applications; other times I need to learn, and that's a lot of fun.

And today I was authorized about 30K to rebuild our test lab. Suggestions?

Depends... what do you need to test?

Applications in all sorts of environments. Thinking about two HP DL380 G6s with a 16tb SAN, one 24 port managed switch, one 24 port baseline, and two UPS' (probably somethin along the lines of APC2200s).

We'll be running ~20 VMs; the Dual Quad/6 core processors should be able to handle it on one server; we're buying two for redundancy. Eventually we'll figure out a better backup solution, right now it's looking like RAID-1 in both servers and probably also RAID-1 in the SAN.

We've thrown around the idea of backing up to our corporate datacenter, but it defeats the purpose of keeping the test environment in an airgap network, so we may have to back up to a NAS. Doesn't much matter if the whole building burns down, but if we put it someplace "safe", at least maybe only one copy of the data will be lost. We won't have "mission-critical" info, so if all were to be lost, it wouldn't destroy us, but we'd lose months of work.

Actually, typing that sentence, no backup solution for the amount of data we're trying to store is fucking ridiculous. I'm pushing for a better backup now. Thanks for the help Squanto ;)

We buy a lot of Supermicro stuff, have pretty decent success with them. Our previous systems admin was buying DESKTOP boards in them, with the cheapest SCSI drives he could get, and chinsed out on RAM, which is just mind boggling. We run a purely Debian linux shop, very few Windows machines aside from workstations.

I'd definitely load up on that RAM for that many VMs. The ones we run are RAM whores for sure.

That's a lot of dough to spend for what you are looking for. I wish I had that kind of budget. :)

Without going into too much detail, it's a government contract.

I'm planning on 16gb RAM per server (8gb per processor, 2gb per core). The servers will have 2.5" 72gb 15k 6G SAS drives.

We're testing a Windows environment, but the servers will each have ESX 4.0 U1 on them.

hehe....there are some really good walkthroughs on the oracle site.

I only touch that stuff from a sys-admin point of view...we've got a real DBA on staff for the fun stuff.

Oh, I'm well past the oracle fit - on to developing this new lab.
