I always thought Guy Fawkes was a strange symbol for popular resistance. He wasn't trying to strike a blow for the people when planning to blow up the House of Lords and the king. If they wanted a popular resistance movement from British history they would have done better to go with the radicals of the Peterloo Massacre in 1819.
However, I don't think the link to Guy Fawkes has anything to do with the British holiday, nor historical events. It is about the character in the movie.
