It is Guy Fawkes day.

Remember, remember the Fifth of November...

Is this a political thread? It would have been in 1605, at the time of the original Gunpowder Plot. Then it became a childhood holiday in Britain, with bonfires and firecrackers.

However, since the release of V for Vendetta it has once again taken on political overtones, with the mask used to represent protest against a variety of social ills.

I suppose we shouldn't tell the folks in Zuccotti park Mr. Fawkes was all about restoring a Catholic monarchy to England.

Really, I just think the mask looks creepy and is viewed as a better alternative than the bandanna ;)

I always thought Guy Fawkes was a strange symbol for popular resistance. He wasn't trying to strike a blow for the people when planning to blow up the House of Lords and the king. If they wanted a popular resistance movement from British history they would have done better to go with the radicals of the Peterloo Massacre in 1819.

However, I don't think the link to Guy Fawkes has anything to do with the British holiday, nor historical events. It is about the character in the movie.

And his creepy mask.
