After reading Squanto lamenting how sorry he was for offering that "cock" Connolly a beer, preferring instead to "kick him in the teeth", it set me to thinking: Has anybody else had an encounter with a Sabre, memorable or not.
My closest encounter was when Staford looked toward the section I was sitting in once. He was then inspired to not score a goal. That's about it!
By the way, Squanto, what was that beer story anyway?
Back in 2003, a friend of mine were at work the night of the NCAA national championship game. (The year Syracuse won.) After working about 20 minutes, we both decided there was no way in hell we were going to sit at work and NOT watch that game, so we took the rest of the night off and shot up to Buffalo Wild Wings on Elmwood.
After being there for about 20 minutes, we looked over in the corner and saw Jay McKee, Rhett Warrener, Denis Hamel, and Tim Connolly were sitting at a table. We both had some liquid courage, so we walked over. I didn't want to be schoolgirl giddy or anything, so I just said that we were big fans, and that it was cool to see them out. Then I offered to buy all 4 of them a beer. They laughed, and Hamel seemed a little shocked that someone would have done that. McKee said that he appreciated it, but they were all set. It seemed to me it was more like they didn't want to take our money to be honest.
Said take care, enjoy the game, and went back to our booth. I thought it was cool enough that we had talked to them for a couple seconds. We probably could have stayed a bit longer, but I didn't want to be intrusive. At halftime, the manager came over with two beers for us, and said it was from the 4 of them. Gave them the nod you give when someone hooks you up, and that was that. Just thought it was great that they were regular guys who treated us like regular guys.
I've also been at Jim Kelley's house in Angola a couple times. He's a GREAT guy, super nice. Was there to do some work on his computer that his daughter had asked me to help with, and Jim insisted we have dinner and go out on the boat first. Didn't touch his computer that night, but did the second night. The memorabilia in that guy's office would make you stain your shorts. He has more handwritten notes from Sabres players than you can imagine. I also saw (and touched) the shirt he was wearing when Hasek attacked him. He had it hanging on his door, signed by at least 50 members of the hockey media. It was just stunning. He tried to pay me for the work, which I wouldn't accept since I already had gotten two dinners, a boat ride, and just to talk to the guy. He insisted I take something, and gave me a complete set of unused season tickets from the last season at the Aud. It's intact, every ticket still attached. Might be the coolest thing I own.
