salary based plan:

a base salary for all players of 500,000 to 3,000,000 a season. you are given a set quota of bonuses you can reach for each player, the total number of bonus + base not exceeding the salary cap. if a players bonus is not collected, that amount is still frozen in the cap numbers. long term contracts will cut down. however, to please the PA, a player gets a no trade clause for 50% of his contract.

30% of bonus money for a player is placed in a retirement fund that can not be accessed until the player reaches HOF eligibility (5 years after retiring)

all trades mean bonus carry over, and therefore, the salary careful trades still occur.

just a rough draft, but i think it works!

Lol, I love the 30% of bonus money can't be touched until after they retire...fuck them, if they cant manage their finances making nearly 10-150x what we do then they can kiss my ass.

You'd never get the NHLPA to agree to that. A player like Peter's shouldn't ever be guaranteed the 1/6 of the money a player like Crosby is. The owners would love it, but the players association won't go for it. They gain absolutely nothing there, and you are taking away NTC's, or effectively reducing them by half. You're talking about taking a ton from the players, and not giving anything in return. That would be an ideal situation for the owners, but what do the players get?

Just playing devils advocate here. I think pay based on performance would help the league, but just curious as to how we get players to agree with this, with the KHL already paying 2-3M guaranteed; and at about 1/3rd of the living costs. You got to give the players a lot more to keep em here than you'd think. Especially the marginal 3rd and 4th line guys who could play 1st line minutes in the KHL for about the same money.

the players? the players get to play the game they love and be wealthy from it. the owners save money, therefore improving facilities the guys can train and play in. this plan could be grand fathered in. obviously, with each player, the bonus can be switched. say peters gets 10 goals in a season, wham! a cool mil.

Come on you know how the unions are, don't care if its the NHLPA or NFLPA... the argument of, "you get to play the game" just wont hold up... I follow your idea a little and like the jest of it... I'd like to see some examples...

I do like pay for performance, I think all the sports have gotten to far away from that...

To also save or help the NHL, the instigator rule needs to go away so the players can better police actions on the ice again....

And the NHL TV deal is CRAP! GARBAGE!!! and with HD making the NHL 100x better to watch, the NHL really needs to revisit how they are presenting the game on TV.... I have direct TV with the center ice package and I live in Pittsburgh... sometimes I have to search 3 or 4 channels to find the game... its stupid.... kiss and make up with ESPN, because Im sick of watching cup stacking on a sports channel and hockey on VS..... Bettman, your ass should be canned simply for your piss poor TV deal....

If you're going to take something away from the players, you're going to have to give them something back in return.

The NMC isn't enough of a give back to justify the salary structure that you propose, which would result in a pay cut for almost all players.

well, i understand such a radical change would have to be the result of another labour dispute and whatnot. the theory of it is a player can reach their current salary, but only if they meet certain statistical expectations.

but if players dont like it, they can take their asses overseas. the product on the ice would be much better, as players would be playing for salary.

The biggest thing the NHL needs to do is reduce the amount able to be given from their first entry level contract and their first real contract. I know Crosby, Malkin, and Ovechkin all deserve it, but it should have a limit on how much they can earn and it can't be shorter than two years. Put a limit on RFA offers from teams coming straight from their rookie contract.

If you put a max salary on that at like 5 million a year, we wouldn't be seeing such ridiculous contracts to still unproven players.

That's my only thing really is to reduce the amount you can earn from the rookie contract to their first real contract, make it a minumum of two years, then they can sign for 8 million if they deserve it.
