Trackball, all the way. Especially for our laptop, since we're often using it where there's no good place for a mouse pad. And the touch pad stinks. Took a little getting used to, but not too much. Much prefer it, now.

I've always used trackballs...love em.
This is the one I currently have on my main computer and at my office
http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-D68-000 ... B00005853Z5 button programmable...it uses your index and middle finger as opposed to the thumb(I hate those) or whole hand (Kensington) type track balls.
I'd definitely recommend it.
EDIT: oh...the only problem with the design of this M$ one is it's asymmetrical. If you're a lefty, you're S.O.L.
EDIT #2: Ignore that amazon price...it's expensive because that model is discontinued. But expect to pay at least $30 for a quality pointing device. My wife uses a tablet...you may want to check those out too but they're not for everyone and take up desk space.
