After six years of loyal service my IBM suddenly crashed on me.

I replaced it with a Gateway and one of the changes was getting rid of my mouse, to be replaced by the touchpad control.

I have to say I hate it. It is overly sensative at times and oddly unresponsive at other times. It is certainly more difficult to highlight and copy information. The thing is constantly changing my screen as I move it.

Is this just an adjustment period and eventually I will come to love it or should I just go out and buy a mouse?

Some track pads just suck and you may need to get a pointing device that you prefer.

Some touch pads (like the one on my MacBook pro) are awesome though. Multi-touch with gestures...so I can drag 2 fingers to scroll a page etc.

On my main-use computer I've always had a trackball because I prefer not moving my hand at all.

EDIT: if you find it's too sensitive however, there should be a way to adjust that.

Get a mouse. I'll always prefer them. I know that some people love trackballs - I can see why - but I just can't get used to them. Touchpads are ideal for building in to laptops - but they're not great for frequent and smooth use (although like anything, you get used to them).

I've always used the touchpad with my laptop and have never had an issue with it.

I absolutely hated them for a long time, though.

Trackball, all the way. Especially for our laptop, since we're often using it where there's no good place for a mouse pad. And the touch pad stinks. Took a little getting used to, but not too much. Much prefer it, now.

I've always used trackballs...love em.
This is the one I currently have on my main computer and at my office

5 button programmable...it uses your index and middle finger as opposed to the thumb(I hate those) or whole hand (Kensington) type track balls.
I'd definitely recommend it.

EDIT: oh...the only problem with the design of this M$ one is it's asymmetrical. If you're a lefty, you're S.O.L.
EDIT #2: Ignore that amazon price...it's expensive because that model is discontinued. But expect to pay at least $30 for a quality pointing device. My wife uses a tablet...you may want to check those out too but they're not for everyone and take up desk space.
