the countries in question you bring up are annexed formed Soviet countries that fell off after the fall of the USSR. its a very small portion of the continent. europe is also considered the birth place of western civilization. the term "euro trash" encapsulates europe as a whole, not a few countries near russia. finland doesnt hate us, spain doesnt, germany, denmark, ect. your broad view doesnt describe the majority of europe, and nearly the whole damn continent.

Europe IS the birthplace of Western civilization. Except for those that are Native American or African American, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US descends from someone in Europe.

I'm also in agreement that most of the countries who "hate" the US are eastern bloc countries that for an entire generation have grown up under the Soviet "USA sucks" banner. Of course they aren't fans of us; they've never known any other way.

Right, but then again you could say the birthplace of Euro culture is Africa...so it is a trickle down affect.

My point is I think we're losing a nationalistic backbone. Sept 11 was a horrible day, and I pray that something like that never happens again, but I think for about 6 months, it got the majority of the country to realize that which Prada bag you have doesn't matter as much was world events.

But now we're back to it.

I guess i'm just comparing medias. Do you know how much the Major news stations in Europe TORE the western world apart over the last 10 years?

Again, I agree with all of you Milbury was wrong in saying this on National TV, but just because in principle, I don't think our media can take being "mean" to another society.

yeah, the europe media tore americas foreign relations and our over seas conflicts apart. and guess what, so did the media here. im sorry to say this, but i think your view on overseas countries and cultures is flat out ignorant.

I don't see us burning flags or anything. I don't see us capturing Arabs and torturing them then executing them and releasing it to the world.

And you better bet, On and after SEPT 11, countries all over the world celebrated, and it wasn't just the middle east. I don't recall us celebrating when Haiti had an Earthquake. Or when southeast Asia had the Tsunami.

I don't see us killing jews just because of religion. I don't see us using chemical weapons on bordering countries.

That's my point.

And irony, I KNOW there are a lot of nice places in Europe, and a lot of nice people. Trust me, it's not totally one sided.

But one "eurotrash" comment on a how a hockey team played is not going to hurt anyone.

Like I said, I'm of euro descent, and I don't take offense to it.

And also, I know this is going WAY too far. It's difficult to display moderate views on a message board.

ok, but i dont think europe was cheering on september 11th. sorry dude. you brought a whole other discussion to the table. saying eurotrash during the olympics is stupid.

oh, and just for the sake of argument, because you brought it up. A. world war 2 was 70 years ago. the US did place people of oriental decent into camps though during WW2. and also, the nazis wernt the total german population, they were basically a political party. and alot of fellow nazis didnt see eye to eye with adolf and his ethnic cleansing. the more you know.

I think that's a bit of an overstatement.

Individual groups were certainly happy about what happened, and countries like Iran were certainly happy to see it, but the worldwide response after 9/11 was overwhelmingly in support of the US.

I guess we'll have to stop there, because there is no way to prove that one way or another. Well except of course for CNN, that for months showed videos of Euro countries parading around. I guess that's the closest thing to proof we can get.

But I was just really talking MEDIA wise. They have news stations that are pretty much dedicated to hating on westerners in the middle east and eastern europe.

All I mean is "American trash" as a term wouldn't even be bothered if it were said within Euro media.

Again, I know i'm looking way too far into it, and again...do not support Milbury for his comments, simply because the media can't handle it.

But REALLY, what he said was not to trash the CULTURE of European born players, but rather the playing style.

And in that regard, overall he may have been right...BUT, I agree with you guys. He was not correct directly on the Semin hit.

Quote:
At a special meeting, European Union foreign ministers asked "all Europeans to observe
three minutes of silence" on Friday, Sept. 14th at 6 a.m. EDT. They declared Friday a
"day of mourning" in all 15 EU nations because the attacks were "not only on the United
States, but against humanity itself and the values of freedom we all share." The EU ministers
said in a statement "There will be no safe haven for terrorists and their sponsors, the Union
will work closely with the United States and all partners to combat international terrorism."

Yeah, the EU was clearly dancing in the streets.

They call that the 'Toronto Maple Leafs Regular Season'.

I seriously just lol'd when I seen this. Now people are looking at me as if I'm insane sitting at my desk.

It's unacceptable no matter who the person is. Don Cherry has hated on Russian and European players for over 20 years, and just has never let the term slip out on air.

Like it or not, the European players are a solid base of the NHL talent's pool, and shouldn't be referred to in such a way

Good post.

This may go against some of the beliefs in which I've known all my life (I'm a product of being raised by Hockey Night in Canada. AKA; The Don Cherry way of life) but players from the Euro countries play the game the way they were taught. Just the same as the folks in the USA and we Canadians were raised. It's not like it's in our blood or DNA coded to play what some may consider a disheartened/cheap/dirty/dominant or pure style, or whatever you wish to call it. It's how we were shown and instructed on how to play the game. Different cultures and areas have different ways of playing the same game.

With what Mad mike had to say regarding the Russian play, well, he needs to draw some kind of press to himself. Be it good or bad because just as he was as a player, that is how he makes his money. Lord knows, he didn't earn his keep as a GM or coach
