the whole "threadjacking" clause is a bit iffy. We've taken great pleasure in derailing certain threads, sometimes with malice, usually without (just some silly tangent that takes place), to now make that an offense, well...it would require a change from the users, and would be a rather new concept that new users would be pretty unfamiliar with. Plus it's kind of a grey area, what if someone starts talking about something thats sort of indirectly related to the original topic...is that threadjacking? If someone else then replies to that indirect post with something indirectly related to that...then the thread content has drifted away from the original intent, but it was done in small steps, and probably wasnt meant to cause harm or to hijack.

Above all, i'd like to ask that the CoC pertain to the Mods, as well as the users.

I put it in there at SATW's suggestion...you have a valid point as well.
Can the 2 of you decide what is an acceptable middle-ground?

Isn't that implied?

Isn't this like asking the police officer how to break out of the jail??

We have always had to abide by the same rules as everyone.

I meant that since here we can swear that section from the old CoC doesn't apply and can be deleted.

The thread-jacking thing is iffy.

On one hand there are a lot of threads started that are just awful.

On the other hand, you'll get certain members going into certain threads complaining because they don't like the op. Whining about how weak a GDT is for example.

I guess my main concern is already something you all see. The fact that I don't want to see a perfectly good thread get undeservedly jacked. How would it be best to word something like that in a CoC though?

Maybe you just leave a generic statement, and remove off topic posts as necessary? That's kind of a toughie.

Maybe say:

If a thread is within the realm of believability and/or consistent with the goals of that forum or subforum members shall make an effort to remain on topic.

That way the really stupid threads calling for preposterous trades aren't covered.

Maybe something like:

3. Stay on topic. Try to keep threads as on topic as possible. Repeated attempts to derail a thread after being asked to stop by thread participants or moderators may result in action taken.

I think that's a good middle ground. If people are OK with the thread jack, cool. If they speak up against it, then it should be obvious to knock it off.

Well, the 'realm of believability', while being a convenient standard, is also pretty ambiguous and subjective. My realm might be much bigger or smaller than your own. Also, some well minded but simple minded people might join us one day, innocently start the most retarded thread ever about something they truly believe to be valid, and it would fall outside the realm of most peoples believability. Does that thread deserve to be jacked?

personally, I think we should leave the threadjacking offense for cases that are UTTERLY clear. I start a thread about, oh, genetic engineering of plants, and someone comes in out of the blue and starts talking about how TV doesnt ever back-check, well thats pretty clearly not the topic. That post should be deleted, and the user given some sort of warning.

I think we need to set up some kind of a standard for NSFW stuff as well. I am opposed to banning it completely, but I think tagging a thread NSFW or using the spoiler code would suffice.

Oh dear god I agree. I was reading the abortion thread the other day, at work, and as I'm scrolling down what do I see but some dude buttfucking some chick wearing a pained expression. Not cool.

No disagreement there. That's one thing that was nice about the old boards. A 'banned' user was simply unable to post, although, as we remember, they could still PM. :)

The way things are here, once banned/timed out, you can't login, so a person couldn't read a PM explaining why action was taken. Maybe XC can adjust that, I dunno.

Sent to email? I don't know how often other people check their mail though.

That's an option, although I think then XC would have to send that message. As a mod we can't see user's individual email addresses unless they fill them in as part of their profile.

I didn't know if you could get them from registration. I don't remember if you had to put in an email address when you registered.

ok, I'll take Squanto's wording for threadjacking...

How about:

7. Be considerate with image posting. If a picture may be considered "not safe for work" be it nudity, profanity or other potentially offensive materials, please use the "spoiler" tag to hide the picture from being displayed by default as some of our members may be visiting the site on public computers or be in the presence of children.

I'll recheck, but I believe it's required for activation.
