The thread-jacking thing is iffy.

On one hand there are a lot of threads started that are just awful.

On the other hand, you'll get certain members going into certain threads complaining because they don't like the op. Whining about how weak a GDT is for example.

I think there should be something in the CoC about what I would like to call a "Thread Intent Violation".

If the original intention of the thread is to talk about (lets say) physics, then I think if a user tries to intentionally go off-topic in hopes to derail the thread their post should be deleted, and the user warned. Three different thread intent violations (on different threads) and you get Tier 1... If it happens a second time in the same thread they get 1st Tier immediately and any successive one from then on just gets the next tier.

But this would kill a lot of my attempts at online humor. Besides, judging people's "intent" is a murky science at best.

Second offense: Offending post or thread may be edited or deleted and the user will be warned. Depending on
severity, the user may also be timed out for up to one week.

Third offense: Offending post or thread may be edited or deleted and the user will be banned. All banning
decisions will be discussed and agreed upon by at least two members of the moderating team.

What I hope people realise is that there is a "report post" option on each post. Since we can't be everywhere at all times, it makes it easier for us to go through reported posts to find offenses.

on the old sabres.com boards, there was a giant "report post" button and people almost never used it.

I always wondered on the mod/admin side what happens when someone 'reports a post'...i'm assuming that somewhere, someones beeper goes off and they bolt upright in bed. Please dont correct me.
