Most teams want the division lead so they get that guaranteed top 3 seed, and home ice for at least one playoff round. Home ice = more $$$ , unless you sweep that is.

Home ice is the only sensible argument to any of this, and even that is a stretch - you still can push it to 3 games at home, and then you only have to win one on the road :/

It's a chance to start the series the way you want to. It's much bigger than just getting 1 extra game at home.

If you go 2-2 in the first 4, you've got 2 at home and 1 away in the last 3.

The whole scenario favors the teams with home ice advantage.

How is rank in the conference going into the playoffs NOT important? Would we rather be the 3rd team, playing the 6th team in the first round, or the 6th team playing the 3rd?

Just as long as they aren't 5th and playing NJ or Pitt.....

I think NYIntensity is saying we should simply seed the teams based on points and not make the division winners top three.

Which I both agree and disagree with. I mean say you finish with 96 points, fifth in the conference in points, but win a difficult division. Being placed third instead of fifth come playoffs is good because it doesn't penalize you for a tougher schedule which is out of your control.
