For Breast Cancer Bracelet, Student Gets Detention

SOUTH GLENS FALLS -- Nicholas Morgan isn't a fan of breast cancer.

The 15-year-old South Glens Falls High School freshman expressed his view on the issue by wearing a black-and-white bracelet with the phrase "I (heart) Boobies" - the slogan of a breast cancer awareness group, keep-a-breast.org.

For that, he was kicked of out his science class on Friday and given detention.

His mother, Barbara Gifford, whose aunt has breast cancer, thinks the disciplinary action went too far. "I don't feel that's a legitimate reason to give someone detention," said Gifford, who bought the bracelet for $3.95 at the Aviation Mall.

She gave it to her son two weeks ago for his 15th birthday.

"Kids have a right to express their political and social views in school," Gifford said. "One bracelet shouldn't be a big huge deal."

Nicholas said he was wearing the bracelet on Friday during his Earth science class. Teacher Marcy Ballard asked him to take it off, saying that she had a loved one who died of breast cancer and the statement was offensive.

Nicholas declined to take the bracelet off, but offered to turn it inside out so the lettering wasn't visible, he said. Not satisfied, the teacher sent him to the office, Nicholas said.

He didn't speak with an assistant principal until Tuesday, who handed down an after-school detention scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

His mother told him not to go.

"I really didn't see how I would get detention for this," he said. "It's just a bracelet - it's not something worth fighting over."

Nicholas wore the bracelet again to science class on Wednesday, this time keeping it inside out. The teacher told him to leave class again, he said.

"He's not doing it to be a troublemaker," Gifford said. "He's doing it because he feels strongly about an issue."

Keep-a-breast.org is an anti-breast cancer group aimed at teenagers. Its goal is both to raise awareness and money to combat the disease.

While the phrase on the bracelet may be a bit crude and produce laughter, it's also meant to increase awareness, Nicholas said.

"People just laugh at it but then they ask what it's all about," he said.

Superintendent Jim McCarthy said the district is supportive of people who suffer from any form of cancer.

"However, the position of the district is to not allow articles or materials or jewelry that's going to be a distraction to the teaching and learning process in our schools," McCarthy said. "If the young lad is certainly sincere and concerned about breast cancer, I'm most willing to work with him to bring a greater level of awareness."

While Nicholas said he wasn't the only student who wears the bracelet - he believes at least six others do - McCarthy said the phrase isn't acceptable in class.

"It's inappropriate for the classroom," he said. "I'm sure the high school administration will deal with that."

I don't even understand how someone can get offended over something like that. It's not even directed at a single person. Plus the group supports breast cancer research.

It's not just up there. My girlfriend substitutes at the high school I graduated from, and they're doing the same thing with kids wearing the 'Save the Boobies' tshirts.

She's not enforcing it in her classes, thinks that it's a stupid rule for the administration to hand down.

I'm pretty sure it's not a distraction in class.

I don't think I'd elect to stare at a T-shirt for the 35 minutes I'm there.

Wow...ridiculous. How can you find that offensive when the slogan directly funds breast cancer research? It's a marketing ploy, a funny/cute slogan to get more people to want to buy the merchandise and raise awareness for breast cancer research. I think I've seen other t-shirts that say "Save the ta-tas" or something like that.

I say they need higher class teachers...the real distraction here is that the teacher wasted time undoubtedly yelling at him, kicking him out of class, and filling out paperwork to describe the incident.

While it's a stupid position for the school to take, his mother advising him to skip detention and him wearing the bracelet into the same damn class the next day makes everyone involved a giant dumbass. It also negates any moral high ground they may have had.

:text-yeahthat: Go to the school and request a meeting with administration and the teacher involved to discuss the issue. If this doesn't resolve it then go to the school board.

Well the term "boobies" isn't exactly a classy term in of itself. I mean, speaking as a teacher, I would just look at it and scoff but do nothing about it. I'd let the administration worry about it.

That's one of my problems. It is a little bit...I don't know. "Boobies".

I agree that the kid should have been able to wear it, and offering to turn it inside out was more than enough, and that the teacher who sent him to detention is a jerk, but wearing it again was stupid.

People are idiots.

The teacher is a douche for making such a big deal of it, the kid is kind of dumb for wearing the thing in class, but how the hell did the teacher find out about it? Super vision?

the damned teacher must of thought it was a sexual innuendo, seeing the wearing teen is male. But, he did explain himself and offered a solution, so his teacher is dim witted bitch.

Agreed. People like this are the reason I think every American should be allowed one free pass to cold cock someone in the face once a year, free from penalty as long it was deserved. This bitch needs a good punch to the face.

I agree. The situation is ridiculous, and the teacher and that school's administration are complete idiots.
