it's actually easier to beat it with chains before you stain it and after the wood has been sanded down and stuff. it allows the stain to "puddle" where the dents are in the wood and stuff and really makes it look old.

My advice: If you're going to build your family a nice table, build the family a nice pool table while you're at it
